Hem Vest in Rowan Pure Alpaca

What is Being Made

The Hem Vest is a sleeveless knitted garment designed to fit chest measurements ranging from 71–76 cm (28–30 inches) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 inches). This vest features a fitted silhouette with structured armholes and a shaped neckline, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and body types. The design includes a back and front panel with distinct shaping at the shoulders and neck.

Techniques Used

This advanced beginner knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its tailored fit. Armhole shaping is accomplished through strategic decreases worked over multiple rows and alternate rows, creating a smooth, contoured curve. Shoulder shaping involves casting off stitches in stages to form the shoulder line, while neck shaping uses decreases at the neck edge combined with staggered cast-offs to create a comfortable neckline opening. The pattern requires working different sections separately and then joining them, demonstrating intermediate construction skills. Ribbed edging is used to create structure and elasticity at the cast-on edge.

Stitches Used

The Hem Vest is primarily constructed using stockinette stitch (st st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with visible V-shaped columns on the right side. The cast-on edge features knit and purl ribbing in a K2, P2 pattern, which provides elasticity and a neat, finished appearance. Ribbing is also used for the neckband. The pattern incorporates knit-through-back-loop decreases (P2tog tbl) and standard purl two together decreases (P2tog) to shape the garment while maintaining a balanced, professional look.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This vest is designed to be knitted in Rowan Pure Alpaca, a luxurious natural fiber yarn. The yardage required varies by size, ranging from 5 balls (50 gm each) for the smallest size up to 11 balls for the largest size. The yarn photographed is shown in the colorway Tropic 129. Two needle sizes are required: 3¼mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed cast-on edge and 3¾mm (US 5) needles for the main body. The pattern achieves a tension of 23 stitches and 29 rows to 10 cm when measured over stockinette stitch using the 3¾mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
