Heri Mini Bear Toy Knitting Pattern by Cascade Yarns

Project Overview

The Heri Mini Bear is a beginner-friendly knitted toy designed by Susie Bonell and published by Cascade Yarns. This charming stuffed bear measures 4½ inches to the top of its ears and is an ideal first project for knitters learning to construct three-dimensional garments. The pattern combines basic knitting techniques with simple finishing methods to create an adorable handmade toy perfect for gifting or personal collection.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a small plush bear toy with articulated limbs, a defined head and body, and a decorative scarf accessory. The bear is constructed from two identical pieces (front and back) that are sewn together and stuffed, creating a soft, cuddly finished toy. The design includes four legs, two arms, a body, a head, and two ears, all integrated into the main knitted structure.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St St): The primary stitch throughout the bear's body, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a characteristic V-pattern appearance on the right side
  • Garter Stitch: Used exclusively for the scarf, created by knitting every row to produce a textured, reversible fabric
  • Increases: Single stitch increases at each end of needles to shape the legs, arms, and head sections
  • Decreases: Knit two together (K2 tog) reductions to shape the body, arms, and head, as well as to close the ear tops
  • Casting On and Binding Off: Standard techniques for beginning and finishing edges throughout the pattern

Stitches and Shaping Methods

The pattern employs a strategic construction method where the bear is worked in one continuous piece from the back section. The first leg is cast on and shaped with increases, then placed on a holder. The second leg is worked identically, and its stitches are joined with the held stitches to create the body foundation with 20 stitches. The body is then shaped with decreases before casting on stitches for the arms at each side, creating a T-shaped silhouette. The head is shaped with alternating increase rows followed by decrease rows to form a rounded top. The ears are small triangular pieces created by casting on 10 stitches, working four rows in stockinette stitch, then decreasing all stitches together using the K2 tog method and threading the yarn through remaining stitches.

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for Cascade Yarns Heritage yarn in brown or a bear-appropriate color, requiring approximately ½ ounce of the main color. A small amount of contrasting yarn is needed for the scarf. Size 1 (5mm) knitting needles are used throughout, and a yarn needle is essential for finishing. Additional materials include five black beads for the eyes, black yarn or embroidery floss for the nose and mouth details, and polyester fiberfill stuffing for creating the three-dimensional toy shape.

Finishing and Assembly

Once both front and back pieces are complete, they are placed together and sewn using an overcast stitch or preferred seaming method, with the top of the head left open for stuffing. The black beads are sewn on for eyes, and the nose and mouth are embroidered using black yarn or floss. The legs, arms, and body are stuffed with polyester fiberfill before the head opening is closed. The ears are then sewn to the top of the head. The scarf is a simple accessory knitted in garter stitch using the contrasting color, measuring approximately 7 inches in length, and can be finished with fringe before being wrapped around the bear's neck.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner pattern, the Heri Mini Bear is accessible to knitters new to toy construction. The techniques required—stockinette stitch, basic increases and decreases, and simple seaming—form the foundation of knitting skills. The small finished size makes the project manageable in scope, and the straightforward shaping instructions provide clear guidance for creating a recognizable bear form.
