Holme + Sandringham Seamless Knitted Garments by Quail Studio

What Is Being Made

This downloadable PDF pattern collection from Mode at Rowan features two seamless knitted designs: the Holme Cabled Sweater and the Sandringham garment. These pieces are advanced-level knitting projects suitable for experienced knitters seeking sophisticated, tailored knitwear. The collection offers multiple size options ranging from chest measurements of 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) up to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches), accommodating a wide range of body types.

Garment Construction: Holme Cabled Sweater

The Holme is constructed as a seamless sweater featuring a distinctive cabled design element. The garment is worked from the bottom up with a ribbed lower edge that measures 4 cm before transitioning into the main pattern. The sweater incorporates raglan armhole shaping, which creates a smooth, contemporary silhouette. The neckline is finished with a separate neckband worked on circular needles measuring 40 cm.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques characteristic of sophisticated garment construction:

  • Seamless construction — The garment is designed to be knitted in one piece, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a professional finish
  • Raglan shaping — Decreases are worked at armhole edges to create the distinctive raglan sleeve cap, requiring careful stitch management across multiple rows
  • Cable work — The pattern features cable panels that require slipping stitches onto cable needles and crossing them to create textured, three-dimensional patterns
  • Ribbed edgings — Elastic ribbed sections at the lower edge and neckline provide structure and help the garment maintain its shape
  • Increases and decreases — Strategic increases within pattern rows and decreases at shaping points create the garment's tailored fit
  • Stitch holders — Used to hold stitches during neck shaping, allowing for the separate neckband to be picked up and worked later

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Holme sweater utilizes several fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • Moss stitch — The primary fabric stitch, worked over the main body of the sweater. Moss stitch (also called seed stitch) is created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, producing a dense, textured fabric that measures 20 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm when worked on 4mm needles
  • Ribbing — Alternating knit and purl stitches in vertical columns, used for the cuff and neckband to create elasticity
  • Cable stitches — Specifically C4B (cable 4 back) and C4F (cable 4 front) abbreviations indicate 4-stitch cables. C4B is worked by slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle and holding at the back of work, knitting the next 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle. C4F reverses this process by holding the cable needle at the front. These cables create the distinctive twisted rope-like texture and are organized into cable panels measuring 16 stitches across and 5 cm in height

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Holme sweater is designed to be worked in Alpaca Wool yarn from the Mode at Rowan collection, a luxury blend combining the softness of alpaca with the durability of wool. The yarn is supplied in 50-gram balls, with yardage requirements varying by size: smaller sizes require 12 balls, while the largest size (152-157 cm chest) requires 23 balls. The sample garment shown in the pattern was photographed in the colorway French 013.

The pattern requires two needle sizes to create proper fabric tension and structure:

  • 3.75mm (UK size 9, US size 5) needles — Used for the ribbed cuff and initial cast-on rows, as well as for the neckband worked on circular needles measuring 40 cm in length. The smaller needle size creates a tighter, more elastic fabric for edgings
