Honeycomb Coat in MODE at Rowan Alpaca Cotton

What Is Being Made

The Honeycomb Coat is a lightweight knitted coat designed by Quail Studio, available in nine sizes to fit chest measurements ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) up to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches). This beginner-friendly knitting project creates a garment with actual chest measurements from 86 cm (33¾ inches) to 164 cm (64½ inches), offering a comfortable, relaxed fit suitable for various body types and layering preferences.

Techniques Used

The Honeycomb Coat employs fundamental knitting construction techniques appropriate for beginner knitters. The garment is constructed using a traditional flat knitting method, with separate pieces for the back, left front, and right front that are later assembled. The coat features lace pattern work as its primary decorative element, created through a repeating 2-row lace chart that is maintained consistently throughout the garment pieces. Shaping is achieved through strategic cast-off decreases at the armhole edges and single-stitch decreases worked at regular intervals to create proper garment silhouette. The pattern includes shoulder shaping at the conclusion of the front and back pieces to ensure proper fit at the neckline and shoulder seams.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure for the Honeycomb Coat is built on stockinette stitch as the foundational fabric, with lace stitches integrated throughout via a charted lace pattern. The pattern instructions reference knit stitches for edge rows and finishing details. The lace pattern is worked over 2 rows repeatedly, creating the visual honeycomb texture that gives the coat its distinctive name and appearance. Decreasing is accomplished through standard single-stitch decreases at armhole and shoulder edges, while cast-off stitches are used to remove groups of stitches at once for larger shaping adjustments.

Materials

The Honeycomb Coat is knitted using Alpaca Cotton yarn from the MODE at Rowan collection, with yarn quantities varying by size from 10 balls (25 grams each) for the smallest sizes up to 14 balls for the largest size. The pattern was photographed in the colorway Sun Valley 021. Construction requires one pair of 4mm (US 6) needles for all pieces. Additional notions include stitch holders for managing stitches during construction and assembly. The specified tension is 20 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters over the lace pattern using 4mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished garment measurements.

So relaxing to knit!

This pattern looks much more complicated than it is. I have been able to memorize it easily, so I can take this project anywhere! The Rowan MODE yarn is also so soft and flexible; I can knit with it for hours.
