What Is Being Made

The Idabel Sweater is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from a 36-inch bust (extra small) to a 68-inch bust (3XL), with finished lengths between 21½ and 24 inches. The sweater is shown in the size 40-inch bust. The pattern accommodates various body measurements and includes approximately 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental sweater construction techniques. The garment begins with a ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles, which is a classic method for creating elastic, fitted edges that prevent rolling. The ribbing is worked in a 1x1 pattern (alternating knit and purl stitches) for 3 inches from the cast-on edge. After the ribbing is complete, the knitter transitions to larger needles and stockinette stitch for the body of the sweater, which creates a smooth, classic fabric suitable for everyday wear.

The pattern requires working with two yarn colors held together throughout the entire project. To ensure even color distribution and prevent one yarn from dominating the fabric, the instructions recommend alternating Artesia skeins every 2 rows. This technique helps create a balanced, cohesive appearance in the finished garment.

Stitches Used

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Idabel Sweater uses two complementary yarns from Berroco, held together as a single strand throughout the project. Berroco Artesia (color #4807 Quince) is used in quantities ranging from 2 to 3 hanks depending on size, with each hank weighing 100 grams. Berroco Ultra Wool (color #3300 Snow) is used in quantities ranging from 3 to 5 balls depending on size, also at 100 grams per unit. Working these two yarns together creates a unique color blend and texture.

Knitting needles in two sizes are required. The ribbed cuff is worked on size 9 / 5.5 mm needles, while the body is worked on size 10½ / 6.5 mm needles, or whatever size is necessary to achieve the correct gauge. A 16-inch circular knitting needle in size 9 / 5.5 mm is also needed for certain sections. Additional notions include 1 stitch marker and 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, worked with both C1 and C2 held together. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining accurate finished measurements and ensuring the sweater fits as intended. The pattern emphasizes checking gauge before beginning to save time and ensure precision.
