James C. Brett Rudolph Knitted Toy

What is Being Made

This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for a chunky Rudolph toy, a festive reindeer character designed as a soft, stuffed plaything. The completed toy measures approximately 61cm and is worked in one size, making it a substantial handmade gift or decoration suitable for display or gentle play.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary craft technique. The pattern involves fundamental knitting methods including increasing and decreasing stitches to shape the toy's various components. The toy is constructed by knitting separate pieces—specifically four legs are worked individually—which are then assembled together. The use of stocking stitch as the main fabric creates a smooth, classic knit texture that works well for a soft toy. Toy stuffing is added during assembly to create the three-dimensional form, and black buttons are attached for the eyes, adding character and detail to the finished Rudolph.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch (St-St) – the primary stitch throughout, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the classic smooth knit fabric
  • Increases (inc) – used to add stitches and shape the toy's body and features
  • Decreases (dec) – used to reduce stitches and refine the toy's contours
  • Slip stitches (s1) – used for joining and finishing edges

Materials and Specifications

The pattern calls for James C. Brett Quality Chunky yarn in three coordinating shades: 2 balls of shade A (Beige), 1 ball of shade B (White), and small amounts of shade C (Red) for details. Knitting needles required are 5mm (UK size 6 / USA size 8) for the main body work and 4mm (UK size 8 / USA size 6) needles for the antlers. Additional materials include toy stuffing to fill the completed pieces and 2 black buttons for eyes. The pattern specifies a tension of 14 stitches and 24 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using 5mm needles, which is essential to achieve the correct finished size and proportions.

Pattern Notes

This is an intermediate-level project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills. The pattern emphasizes the importance of working to the stated tension to ensure success; adjusting needle sizes if tension does not match is recommended. The toy is not suitable for children under 3 years old due to small parts (buttons and stuffing). The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to work from digital instructions at their own pace.

It is a great pattern, but the recommended yarns are not available. The pattern should include more directions about attaching the head. Also, the antlers will not stand up straight without inserting some sort of dowel that can go partway through the antlers and into the head. I used old double pointed needles (I had an incomplete set).
