Jo Sharp Garter Stitch Jacket

What is Being Made

The Jo Sharp Garter Stitch Jacket is an elegant, seamed knit jacket designed for women in six size options (A through F, to fit bust/chest measurements from 80cm to 130cm). This versatile piece is offered in two length versions: Version 1 at 30cm bodice length and Version 2 at 50cm bodice length, providing options for both cropped and longer silhouettes. The jacket features two buttoning options and is constructed from individual seamed pieces including front panels, back panel, and sleeves.

Techniques Used

This jacket is worked using fundamental seamed knitting construction techniques. The pattern involves casting on stitches for each major component (back, left front, right front, and sleeves), working sections in garter stitch before shaping, then strategically decreasing stitches to create armhole shaping and front neckline shaping. The pieces are finished with reverse stockinette stitch on the sleeves and then seamed together. Buttonholes and button placement are incorporated as design details, with the second button positioned 8cm from the neck edge on Version 1.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the jacket body, created by knitting every row to produce a textured, reversible fabric
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Used on the sleeves for textural contrast
  • Cast on and cast off techniques: Used to begin and finish sections, with reverse stockinette cast off for a refined edge
  • Decreasing: Single stitch decreases worked at armhole and neckline edges to shape the garment

Materials

The Jo Sharp Garter Stitch Jacket is designed to be worked in Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed yarn, available in two colorways: 125 Tartan and 143 Twig. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 11 to 15 fifty-gram balls for Version 1 and 13 to 19 fifty-gram balls for Version 2. The pattern calls for 5.00mm needles for construction. The Silkroad Aran Tweed is an aran-weight yarn suitable for creating the structured, textured appearance of garter stitch in a garment with excellent drape and durability.

Construction Details

Each size includes specific stitch counts and measurements to ensure proper fit across the six size range. The back and front panels are worked to length before armhole shaping is introduced, with 10 to 12 stitches cast off at the armhole on the right side. Front neckline shaping begins after the armhole is established, with 10 stitches cast off and subsequent single-stitch decreases worked over multiple rows to create a gradual, elegant neck curve. The jacket reaches its full armhole depth of 23 to 28cm (depending on size) before pieces are cast off and seamed together to complete the garment.
