What is Being Made

The Jo Sharp Indulgence Mohair Socks are lovely and light knee-length socks designed to wear about the house. This downloadable knitting pattern produces one size that fits all average adults, offering comfortable everyday wear in a luxurious mohair construction.

Yarn and Materials

This project uses Jo Sharp Rare Comfort Kid Mohair yarn. Version 1 of the pattern requires 3 x 25g balls in the colourway 601 Clove. Knitting is worked on a set of 4.50mm double pointed needles (USA size 7, UK size 7).

Techniques Used

The socks are worked in the round using double pointed needles, a traditional method that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for sock construction. The pattern involves shaping for the leg and instep, followed by toe decreases, with a grafted finish to close the toe opening.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

• Stocking Stitch – the primary fabric used throughout, measured at 18 stitches and 24 rows over 10cm on 4.50mm needles
• Ribbing – the leg begins with a knit 2 through back loop, purl 2 rib pattern worked for 7.5cm to create elasticity and shape
• Knit stitches – including standard knit and knit through back loop variations
• Decreases – K2tog (knit 2 together), slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (sl1, k1, psso), and K3tog (knit 3 together) used for shaping the instep and toe
• Grafting – Kitchener stitch technique applied to join the final toe stitches for a seamless finish

Pattern Construction

The sock begins with a loosely cast-on edge of 52 stitches divided across 3 double pointed needles (18-16-18 distribution). The leg features a ribbed cuff worked for 7.5cm, followed by 7.5cm of stocking stitch. Shaping for the instep occurs over the first and third needles through paired decreases worked on alternating rounds until 11 stitches remain on each of these needles. The foot continues without further shaping until it measures 22cm from the side of the heel (or the length required). The toe is shaped with decreases worked across all three needles until 12 stitches remain, then the stitches are grafted together to complete the sock.
