Jo Sharp Raglan Sweater

What is Being Made

A roomy raglan sweater featuring a relaxed, loose fit with a longer length option. The design showcases jumbo ribbed yoke and wide ribs throughout, creating a distinctive textured aesthetic. Two versions are provided: Version 1 with a standard neckline and narrower ribs, and Version 2 with a longer silhouette and invisible pocket detail on the front bodice.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction, a classic approach where the body and sleeves are knitted separately from the lower edges upward, then joined together. The raglan shaping is achieved through strategic decreasing along the raglan edges, creating the characteristic diagonal seams from the underarm to the neckline. Pocket linings are incorporated in Version 1, requiring invisible stitching techniques to secure the lining to the inside of the bodice front without visible stitches on the exterior. The neckband is picked up and knitted using a circular needle, ensuring a neat, finished edge.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) – forms the main fabric of the body and sleeves
  • K2, P2 Ribbing – creates the textured ribs at the lower edge, yoke, and neckband; provides elasticity and structure
  • Decreases – K3tog (knit three together) and paired decreases on raglan edges to shape the yoke
  • Make 1 (M1) – used for increasing stitches during pocket opening construction
  • Slip Stitch – secures pocket lining invisibly to the garment interior

Materials

This sweater is knitted with Jo Sharp Classic DK Wool, a smooth, durable yarn in the DK (double knitting) weight category. The pattern calls for 4.00mm needles for the main body and ribbing, and a 4.00mm circular needle for the neckband. The classic earthy wool provides warmth and a timeless aesthetic suitable for everyday wear.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern is provided in multiple sizes with stitch counts of 162, 194, and 210 stitches for the cast-on, accommodating different body measurements. The loose fit design offers comfortable ease for layering and relaxed styling.
