Jo Sharp Simple T-Shirt

What is Being Made

The Jo Sharp Simple T-Shirt is an easy-to-knit sweater featuring a snug, fitted silhouette with a simple drop shoulder construction. This versatile garment is available in two sleeve length options: long sleeves (Version 1) or three-quarter length sleeves (Version 2). The design offers a classic, understated aesthetic suitable for everyday wear, with the model pictured wearing size A (size 8).

Techniques Used

This sweater is worked flat on straight needles and features seamed construction. The garment is knitted in pieces—front, back, and sleeves—which are then seamed together. The pattern employs strategic shaping techniques including increases worked at regular intervals to create the sleeve cap shaping, and decreases at the neckline to form the neck opening. The use of larger needles than typically recommended for the yarn (4.00mm instead of the standard 3.25mm) is intentional, creating a lighter, faster-knitting fabric that drapes more elegantly.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch – Used for the ribbed edging at the cuffs and hem, providing elasticity and a finished appearance
  • Stocking Stitch – The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Knit and Purl Increases – Including Kfb (knit into front and back) and Pfb (purl into front and back) techniques for seamless shaping
  • Cast-off techniques – Used to bind off stitches at the shoulders and neckline

Materials

The Jo Sharp Simple T-Shirt is designed to be knitted with Jo Sharp Mulberry Silk Georgette, a premium hand-knitting yarn. Two colorways are available: Colour 769 Sparrow (requiring 8, 8, 8, or 9 fifty-gram balls depending on size) for Version 1 with long sleeves, and Colour 763 Pebble (requiring 7, 8, 8, or 9 fifty-gram balls) for Version 2 with three-quarter sleeves. Knitters will need 3.75mm straight needles for the ribbed edging sections and 4.00mm straight needles for the main body and sleeves. The choice of larger needles creates a lighter fabric weight while maintaining the intended fit and drape of the finished garment.
