Jody Long Emma Knit Sweater

Garment Overview

Emma is a knitted sweater designed for experienced knitters, offering an introduction to various shaping techniques through simple, straightforward construction. This pullover sweater is part of the Summer Delight Collection and is available in six sizes ranging from Small (bust 81-86 cm / 32-34 in) to XXXL (bust 132-137 cm / 52-54 in), with finished bust measurements from 114 cm (45 in) to 159 cm (62½ in). The garment features a full length from neck shoulder point ranging from 56 cm (22 in) to 65 cm (25½ in), with consistent sleeve length of 44-45 cm (17¼-17¾ in) across sizes.

Construction Methods

Emma is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach, with pieces worked flat on straight needles. The pattern incorporates worked-in-the-round elements as well, providing knitters with experience in multiple construction techniques. This hybrid approach allows knitters to develop proficiency with both flat and circular knitting methods within a single project.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The sweater features lace as a primary design element, creating visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The pattern begins with a twisted rib foundation, worked over 10 rows using a knit-through-the-back-loop (K1 tbl) and purl-through-the-back-loop (P1 tbl) combination. This twisted rib provides an elastic, refined edge that differs from standard ribbing.

The main body of Emma showcases a 20-stitch lace pattern repeat that repeats across each row, with a 16-row pattern repeat worked throughout the body sections. The lace pattern is charted and repeated 6 to 8 times across the row depending on size, creating a cohesive, all-over lace design. The pattern also incorporates stockinette stitch (st st) as a secondary stitch, used in specific areas for contrast and structure.

Materials and Gauge

Emma is worked using Jody Long SUMMER DELIGHT yarn in the colorway Claret 021 (shown in the pattern). Yarn requirements range from 8 x 100g balls for the smallest size to 12 x 100g balls for the largest size, with intermediate quantities for mid-range sizes.

The pattern is worked on 3.75 mm (US 5) needles for the main fabric, with 3.25 mm (US 3) circular needles used for ribbed sections. A cable needle is also required for the pattern work. The tension is critical for achieving proper fit: one pattern repeat (20 stitches) measures 9 cm (3½ in) and 31 rows measure 10 cm (4 in) when measured over the lace pattern using 3.75 mm needles. Additionally, 21 stitches and 26 rows measure 10 cm (4 in) when measured over stockinette stitch using the same needle size.

Pattern Structure

Instructions are provided for the smallest size (S), with adjustments for larger sizes indicated in square brackets. Pattern repeats are shown in round brackets with the number of repetitions specified. Where a figure of 0 appears, no stitches, times, or rows are worked for that particular size. The pattern notes that yarn quantities are approximate and based on average requirements, and color reproduction in the printed pattern is as close as the printing process allows.
