Jody Long JL-Amelia Cardigan - Crochet Pattern Summary
What is Being Made
The Jody Long JL-Amelia is a crocheted cardigan from the FLORA Collection, designed for experienced knitters and crocheters. This garment is available in six sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 81-86 cm / 32-34 in) through to XXXL (to fit bust 132-137 cm / 52-54 in). The cardigan features a full length of 58-67 cm (22¾-26½ in) from neck shoulder point and is finished with seven buttons.
Techniques Used
The Amelia cardigan employs several key crochet construction techniques:
- Bottom-Up Construction: The garment is worked beginning from the bottom edge and progressing upward toward the neckline.
- Worked Flat: Pieces are crocheted in flat rows rather than in continuous rounds, allowing for traditional seaming.
- Seamed Assembly: Individual flat-worked pieces are sewn together to form the finished cardigan.
- Lace Patterning: The design incorporates lace elements throughout, creating an openwork aesthetic typical of the FLORA Collection.
- Shaping Techniques: The pattern introduces various shaping methods suitable for experienced crafters, including structured increases and decreases to create the cardigan's silhouette.
Stitches Used
The Amelia pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined in a sophisticated lace arrangement. The primary stitch pattern consists of double crochet (dc) stitches interspersed with chain spaces to create the openwork lace effect. The foundation row establishes the pattern with chains and double crochets: 1 dc into 2nd ch from hook, *5 ch, miss 4 ch, 1 dc into next ch, repeated across. Subsequent rows build upon this foundation using treble stitches (tr), chain spaces (ch), and decorative picot details (formed as 1 dc, 3 ch and 1 dc). The lace pattern repeats are worked across the width, with the hem and cuff border measuring approximately 10 cm (4 in) in depth.
Materials and Tools
The Amelia cardigan is worked using Jody Long FLORA yarn in the Snowdrop colorway (001). Yarn quantities are approximate and based on average requirements, ranging from 4 x 100g balls for smaller sizes to 7 x 100g balls for the largest size (XXXL).
Two crochet hook sizes are required for this project:
- 2.75 mm (US C2) crochet hook: Used for the main body and pattern work. Tension is established at 5 pattern repeats to 11 cm (4¼ in) and 12 rows to 10 cm (4 in) when measured over the lace pattern using this hook size.
- 3.25 mm (US D3) crochet hook: Likely used for border finishing or ribbing elements.
The pattern requires seven buttons for closure along the front of the cardigan.
Pattern Notes and Considerations
The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout. Instructions are provided for the smallest size (Small) with size variations for larger sizes indicated in square brackets. Repeat instructions given in round brackets indicate the number of times those stitches should be worked. Where only one figure appears without size variations, that instruction applies to all sizes. A zero (0) indicates that no stitches, repeats, or rows are worked for that particular size.
Achieving correct tension before beginning is essential, as tension directly governs the finished garment size. Crafters should work a tension swatch using the 2.75 mm hook over the lace pattern to ensure their finished cardigan meets the intended measurements.
