Jody Long JLC Blossom Sweater
What is Being Made
The Jody Long JLC Blossom is a knitted sweater designed for beginner knitters, featuring basic garment shaping and straightforward construction techniques. This pullover-style sweater is part of the Cottontails Collection and is available in six sizes ranging from Small to XXXL, with finished bust measurements from 38½ inches (98 cm) to 58¾ inches (149 cm).
Construction Techniques
The Blossom sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach, meaning the garment pieces are knitted from the lower edges upward and then sewn together. The sweater is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for straightforward row-by-row construction ideal for beginner knitters. The design incorporates horizontal stripes created by joining a contrasting yarn color during stockinette stitch sections.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The sweater begins with a classic ribbed cuff worked in a K1, P1 (knit one, purl one) alternating pattern. This ribbed section measures approximately 6 cm (2¼ inches) and provides elasticity at the lower edge. Following the ribbed cuff, the main body is worked in stockinette stitch (st st), which creates a smooth, uniform fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns. Shaping is achieved through purl two together decreases (P2tog) strategically placed to reduce stitch counts as the garment progresses upward.
Materials and Needles
The Blossom sweater is knitted using Jody Long Cottontails yarn in two colors. Yarn A is Sheep 002 (the main color), with quantities ranging from 7 to 11 balls of 75g depending on size. Yarn B is Night 006 (the contrast color), requiring 2 to 3 balls of 75g. The pattern calls for two pairs of needles: 4 mm (US 6) needles for the ribbed sections and 5 mm (US 8) needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The recommended tension is 18 stitches and 26 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using the 5 mm needles, making accurate gauge checking essential for proper fit.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The pattern provides detailed finished measurements for all six sizes. Full length from shoulder point ranges from 26½ inches (67 cm) for the smallest size to 29½ inches (75 cm) for the largest. Sleeve length remains consistent across most sizes at approximately 18 inches (45.5–46.5 cm). The sweater is designed to fit bust measurements from 32–34 inches (81–86 cm) in the smallest size up to 52–54 inches (132–137 cm) in the largest size.
