Jody Long Coral Sweater
What is Being Made
The Jody Long Coral is a knitted poncho-style sweater from the Cottontails Collection, designed for experienced knitters. This garment is knitted as one continuous piece beginning at the front hem edge, creating a sophisticated layering piece suitable for multiple bust sizes ranging from 81–91 cm (32–36 inches) through to 127–137 cm (50–54 inches). The finished sweater measures approximately 128–174.5 cm (50½–68¾ inches) in width and 63–79.5 cm (24¾–31¼ inches) in full length from shoulder.
Techniques Used
This sweater employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure:
- Bottom-Up Construction: The garment is worked from the front hem edge upward, allowing for intuitive sizing and fit adjustments as you progress.
- Worked Flat: The main body is knitted flat on straight needles rather than in continuous rounds, with seaming used to join sections together.
- Lace Patterning: Two symmetrical lace panels are integrated into the design, worked from charted instructions and positioned strategically across the front and back sections to create visual interest and texture variation.
- Seamed Construction: Sections are joined using seaming techniques, a hallmark of garments worked flat that require assembly.
- Shaping Techniques: The pattern introduces various shaping methods appropriate for experienced knitters, allowing the poncho silhouette to be achieved through strategic increases and decreases.
Stitches Used
The Jody Long Coral utilizes fundamental and intermediate stitch techniques:
- Garter Stitch (g st): Used for the initial 14 rows at the front hem edge, creating a textured, reversible fabric that provides structure and prevents curling at the lower edge.
- Stockinette Stitch (st st): The primary stitch throughout the main body, providing a smooth, classic knit fabric that serves as the foundation for the garment.
- Lace Stitches: Charted lace panels are worked across 33 stitches in two separate sections, creating openwork patterns that add elegance and visual complexity to the design. These lace sections are worked simultaneously with stockinette sections, requiring careful attention to pattern placement and stitch counts.
Materials and Specifications
The Jody Long Coral is worked using Jody Long COTTONTAILS yarn, a 75-gram skein weight available in multiple colorways (shown here in Mandarin 009). Yarn requirements range from 9 skeins for the smallest size (S) to 15 skeins for the largest size (XXXL), with intermediate quantities of 11 skeins (M-L) and 13 skeins (XL-XXL) for mid-range sizes.
Needles required include one pair of 4 mm (US 6) needles for the initial garter stitch hem, one pair of 5 mm (US 8) needles for the main body and lace pattern work, and one 4 mm (US 6) circular needle for any finishing techniques. The recommended tension is 18 stitches and 26 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using 5 mm (US 8) needles—achieving proper tension is essential before beginning to ensure the finished garment matches the intended dimensions and yarn requirements.
Pattern Notes
This pattern is designed for experienced knitters who are comfortable with chart reading, lace techniques, and garment shaping. Instructions are provided for the smallest size with bracketed modifications for larger sizes. The pattern uses standard abbreviations including repeat notation in round brackets and includes a comprehensive schematic with precise measurements for all four size ranges.
