Jody Long JLA Alyssa Knitted Sweater
What is Being Made
The Alyssa is a knitted sweater from the Jody Long FLORA Collection, designed for advanced knitters. This garment is available in six sizes ranging from Small to XXXL, with bust measurements from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). The sweater features a full length from neck edge of 58-65 cm (22¾-25½ inches) depending on size, with consistent sleeve length of 44-45 cm (17¼-17¾ inches) across most sizes.
Techniques Used
The Alyssa employs multiple advanced knitting techniques suitable for experienced crafters. The sweater is worked seamlessly in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous fabric. Cable techniques are incorporated throughout the design, utilizing specialized cable stitches such as C2B (cable 2 back) and C2F (cable 2 front) for textured, dimensional patterning. Lace elements add delicate openwork details to the design. The construction method is bottom-up, meaning the sweater is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the neckline. The pattern includes garment shaping and advanced stitch patterns that require careful attention and skill to execute properly.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates several specialized stitches and techniques:
- Cable stitches: C2B (slip next stitch onto cable needle and leave at back of work, knit 1, then knit 1 from cable needle) and C2F (slip next stitch onto cable needle and leave at front of work, knit 1, then knit 1 from cable needle) create twisted, rope-like textures
- M1 (Make One): Increases worked by picking up the horizontal loop lying before the next stitch and knitting into the back of it, creating invisible increases
- MB (Make Bobble): A decorative stitch worked by drawing loops through a stitch from three rows below and creating a textured bobble effect
- Advanced stitch patterns worked in repeat sequences, indicated by round bracket notation showing how many times each pattern section should be repeated
Materials
The Alyssa requires Jody Long FLORA yarn in quantities ranging from 4 to 7 x 100g balls depending on the size selected (shown in the Snowdrop 001 colorway). The pattern specifies two circular needle sizes: 2.75 mm (US 2) needles and 3.25 mm (US 3) circular needles for the main fabric. Additionally, a set of 4 double-pointed needles in both 2.75 mm and 3.25 mm sizes are required, along with a cable needle for managing cable stitches. The pattern is designed to achieve a tension of 24 stitches and 31 rounds over 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch on the specified needles.
Pattern Notes
Instructions are provided for the smallest size (Small) with size variations for larger sizes indicated in square brackets. Yarn quantities are approximate based on average requirements. Where a figure of 0 appears in the instructions, no stitches, times, or rows are worked for that particular size. The pattern uses repeat figures in round brackets to indicate how many times a sequence should be worked. This downloadable PDF format allows crafters to reference the complete schematic, stitch abbreviations, and detailed row-by-row instructions for creating this advanced knitted sweater.
