Jody Long Candace Knitted Sweater
What is Being Made
The Jody Long Candace is a knitted sweater designed for experienced knitters. This garment is available in six sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 81-86 cm / 32-34 in) through to XXXL (to fit bust 132-137 cm / 52-54 in). The sweater features a classic construction with the back measuring 71-76 cm (28-30 in) in full length from the side neck, while the front is 16 rows shorter. Sleeve length is approximately 45-47 cm (17¾-18½ in) across the size range, with the actual underarm measurement ranging from 109 cm (43 in) for the smallest size to 157.5 cm (62 in) for the largest size.
Techniques Used
The Candace employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for experienced knitters. The garment is worked flat on straight needles for the main body pieces, with the option of using a circular needle as specified in the pattern requirements. The construction method is bottom-up, meaning the sweater is knitted beginning from the lower edges and working upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The pattern incorporates seamed construction, where individual pieces are knitted separately and then joined together. Lace techniques are introduced as part of the shaping methods, adding decorative and structural elements to the design. The pattern notes indicate that it introduces "various shaping techniques," making it suitable for knitters looking to develop their skills beyond basic stockinette stitch.
Stitches Used
The Candace pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with more advanced techniques. The ribbed edging is created using alternating knit and purl stitches in a 1x1 rib pattern, which provides elasticity and a neat finish at the lower edges. The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, as indicated by the tension measurement given "over st st" (stockinette stitch). Shaping is achieved through knit two together (K2tog) decreases, as shown in Row 34 of the back pattern where decreases are worked across the piece. The pattern incorporates purl and knit combinations in structured sequences, such as the P2, K2 repeats noted in the ribbing rows. These stitch combinations create texture and structure while remaining manageable for experienced knitters developing their technical repertoire.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Candace is designed to be knitted using Jody Long ROVESOFT yarn, with quantities ranging from 6 to 8 balls of 100g weight depending on the size being made. The yarn shown in the pattern is displayed in Gold 014. The pattern requires two needle sizes: 5 mm (US 8) needles are used for the ribbed sections and main fabric, while 5.5 mm (US 9) needles are used for specific sections where a slightly looser gauge is desired. A 5 mm (US 8) circular needle is also listed in the materials, providing flexibility in construction method. The tension is established at 16½ stitches and 21 rows to 10 cm (4 in) when measured over stockinette stitch using the 5.5 mm needles, making accurate tension checking essential before beginning the project to ensure the finished garment achieves the intended dimensions.
