Jody Long JL Claire Knitted Cape and Poncho

What Is Being Made

The Jody Long JL Claire is a knitted poncho from the ANDEAMO Collection, designed as a versatile layering piece suitable for experienced knitters. This garment features straightforward knitting construction with various shaping techniques incorporated throughout the design. The finished poncho measures 123 cm (48½ inches) in width and 73 cm (28¾ inches) in length, making it a generous, comfortable garment for wearing over other clothing.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Claire poncho employs several key knitting techniques that provide both structural interest and visual appeal:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The garment is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the piece as it progresses and adjust the final length as needed.
  • Worked Flat: Rather than being worked in the round, this poncho is constructed using flat knitting on straight needles, with seaming used to join sections together.
  • Lace Elements: The design incorporates lace patterning to create visual texture and interest within the main body of the poncho.
  • Shaping Techniques: Various shaping methods are introduced throughout the pattern, making this an educational project for experienced knitters looking to expand their technical skills.
  • Ribbed and Ridge Patterning: The pattern establishes stitch definition through combinations of rib and ridge stitch patterns, with the first and last 5 stitches worked in ridge pattern and interior stitches in rib.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Claire utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined into structured patterns:

  • Knit and Purl Stitches: The foundation of the design, creating the textured surface through alternating knit (K) and purl (P) stitches.
  • Ribbed Stitches: Used for the main body patterning, creating vertical lines of texture that provide elasticity and structure.
  • Ridge Stitch Pattern: Applied to the edge stitches (first and last 5 stitches of each row) to create a defined border frame.
  • Repeat Patterns: The pattern uses repeat notation, where sequences of stitches marked with asterisks (*) are repeated across the row a specified number of times, allowing for consistent patterning across the width of the garment.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Claire poncho is designed to be worked with specific materials that ensure proper drape and finished dimensions:

  • Yarn: Jody Long ANDEAMO yarn is used for this project, with a total yardage requirement of 5 × 100g skeins (approximately 500 grams total). The sample shown is worked in the Sunset 010 colorway. Yarn quantities provided are approximate and based on average requirements.
  • Needles: Two pairs of needles in different sizes are required: 10 mm (US 15) needles for the initial cast-on and setup rows, and 12 mm (US 17) needles for the main body of the poncho. The larger needle size is used for the majority of the work.
  • Tension: The pattern is designed to achieve 7½ stitches and 11½ rows to 10 cm (4 inches) when measured over the pattern using 12 mm (US 17) needles. Checking tension before beginning is essential, as incorrect tension will affect the final garment size and may result in running out of yarn or requiring additional yardage.

Pattern Notes and Construction Details

The Claire pattern is written with clear instructions for multiple sizes. The smallest size instructions are given in the main text, with adjustments for larger sizes provided in square brackets. Where only one figure appears without brackets, that instruction applies to all sizes. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and repeat notation, with parentheses indicating sequences to be repeated a specified number of times. The main section begins with casting on 125 stitches using the smaller 10 mm needles, establishing the stitch pattern with the first four rows before continuing in pattern as set. This downloadable PDF pattern provides complete instructions for creating a sophisticated, textured poncho suitable for intermediate to advanced knitters seeking to develop their technical skills.
