Jody Long Sandra Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

The Sandra is a knitted sweater designed for beginner knitters, featuring basic garment shaping and straightforward knitting techniques. This pullover style sweater is available in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL, with finished bust measurements from 81–86 cm (32–34 inches) up to 132–137 cm (52–54 inches). The sweater offers a classic fit with full length measurements ranging from 81.5 cm to 88.5 cm (32 to 34¾ inches) and sleeve lengths of 45–47 cm (17¾ to 18½ inches).

Construction Techniques

The Sandra sweater is constructed using bottom-up knitting methodology, meaning the garment is worked from the lower edge upward. The pattern employs both worked flat and worked in the round techniques, allowing knitters flexibility in their approach. The finished pieces are seamed together, which is a fundamental technique for joining knitted fabric sections. This combination of techniques makes the pattern accessible for beginner knitters while maintaining professional construction standards.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Sandra uses a combination of fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner-level projects. The pattern features garter stitch (abbreviated as g st), which is created by knitting every row and produces a textured, reversible fabric. The main body incorporates a knit and purl pattern (K1, P1 ribbing variations), which creates visual interest and elasticity. Increases are worked using make one stitches (M1), a common shaping technique that adds stitches evenly across rows. The pattern instructions use standard abbreviations: K for knit, P for purl, sts for stitches, and rep for repeat, with increases strategically placed at each end of alternating rows to create gradual, balanced shaping.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Sandra is designed to be worked in Jody Long ANDEAMO yarn, a bulky weight yarn requiring 5 to 8 balls of 200g depending on the finished size. The pattern specifies 10 mm (US 15) needles as the primary needle size for the main fabric, with 9 mm (US 13) needles used for ribbed edgings and finishing details. A 9 mm (US 13) circular needle is also listed, accommodating the option to work sections in the round. The recommended yarn shown in the pattern is presented in Cobalt 018, a rich blue colorway. Working tension is established at 10½ stitches and 14 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over the stitch pattern using 10 mm needles, making tension checking essential before beginning the project to ensure the finished garment achieves the intended measurements.

Pattern Features for Beginners

The Sandra pattern is specifically designed with beginner knitters in mind, incorporating straightforward shaping techniques and clear, easy-to-follow instructions. The pattern uses standard notation with size variations provided in square brackets, allowing knitters to track their specific size throughout. Repeat instructions are given in round brackets with the number of repetitions specified, and the pattern notes that where a figure 0 appears, no stitches, times, or rows are worked for that particular size. This thoughtful formatting helps prevent confusion and supports successful completion of the project.
