Jody Long Sharon Knitted Sweater
What is Being Made
The Sharon is a knitted sweater designed for experienced knitters, part of the Summer Delight Collection. This garment is constructed as a pullover-style jumper available in six sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 81-86 cm / 32-34 in) through to 3XL (to fit bust 132-137 cm / 52-54 in). The finished sweater features a straight-forward construction with various shaping techniques integrated throughout the design process.
Construction Method
Sharon is worked using a bottom-up, seamed construction method. The garment pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, meaning the back, front, and sleeves are knitted as individual pieces and then seamed together upon completion. This approach allows for precise shaping and lace pattern placement across the garment.
Techniques and Stitches
The pattern introduces lace work as a primary design feature. The lace is created using fundamental lace-knitting techniques including:
- Yarn overs (yo) - used to create the openwork characteristic of lace patterns
- Decreases - specifically K2tog (knit two together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) stitches that pair with yarn overs to maintain stitch counts while creating the lace structure
- Garter stitch (g st) - used for the initial foundation rows and edge finishing
- Mesh pattern - the primary lace pattern repeat that forms the body of the garment
The pattern incorporates decreasing shaping techniques to create proper garment fit. For example, the back piece begins with 109 to 167 stitches depending on size, then is reduced through strategic K2tog decreases to create the finished proportions.
Materials Required
The Sharon requires Jody Long SUMMER DELIGHT yarn in quantities ranging from 7 x 100g balls for the smallest size (S) to 10 x 100g balls for the largest size (3XL). The yarn is worked on two sizes of needles:
- 3.75 mm (US 5) needles - used for the initial cast-on and foundation rows
- 4.5 mm (US 7) needles - the primary needle size for working the main lace pattern and shaping
The pattern also requires 2 buttons for finishing. The recommended tension is 17½ stitches and 27 rows to 10 cm (4 in) when measured over the mesh pattern using the 4.5 mm needles, making accurate tension swatching essential before beginning the project.
Garment Specifications
The finished sweater measurements include an actual bust measurement ranging from 105 cm (41¼ in) for size S to 160 cm (63 in) for size 3XL. The full length from shoulder measures between 67-72 cm (26½-28¼ in) across the size range, while sleeve length when unrolled is approximately 44-46 cm (17¼-18 in).
