Jody Long Toni Sweater

What is Being Made

The Jody Long Toni is a summer sweater from the Summer Delight Collection, designed as a beginner-friendly knitting project. This garment features basic shaping and straightforward construction techniques suitable for knitters new to garment assembly. The sweater is available in six sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 81-86 cm / 32-34 in) through to XXXL (to fit bust 132-137 cm / 52-54 in), with finished bust measurements ranging from 100 cm (39¼ in) to 151 cm (59½ in).

Techniques Used

The Toni sweater is constructed using bottom-up construction, meaning pieces are knitted from the lower edge upward. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and pieces are seamed together after completion. A distinctive design feature is the use of horizontal stripes throughout the sweater, created by alternating between different colored yarns in a repeating pattern.

The pattern begins with ribbed edging at the lower edge, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. The ribbing is worked in a 1x1 rib pattern (alternating knit and purl stitches) for 13 rows total. After the ribbed cuff, the pattern transitions to stockinette stitch for the body and sleeves, maintaining the striped colorwork throughout. The pattern includes decreasing techniques, specifically using purl two together (P2tog) decreases to shape the garment appropriately across different sizes.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K): The fundamental stitch forming the basis of stockinette stitch
  • Purl stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create ribbed edges and in decrease techniques
  • 1x1 Ribbing: Created by alternating K1, P1 across rows, providing stretch and structure at the garment edges
  • Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric stitch, created by alternating knit rows (on right side) and purl rows (on wrong side), forming a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Purl two together (P2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the garment by reducing stitch count

Materials and Tools

The Toni sweater requires yarn in six colors from the Jody Long Summer Delight range. Yarn A (Twilight 005) is the primary color, requiring 3-6 balls of 100g depending on size. Yarn B (Bleached 002) is used for striping and requires 2-4 balls of 100g. Accent colors include Yarn C (Summer 011), Yarn D (Emerald 019), Yarn E (Tulip 009), and Yarn F (Tomato 008), each requiring 1 ball of 100g for all sizes. The pattern is worked on two pairs of needles: 3.25 mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed sections and 3.75 mm (US 5) needles for the main stockinette stitch fabric. The needle size change creates a subtle transition between the elastic ribbed edges and the drapier body fabric.

Pattern Structure and Sizing

Instructions are provided for the smallest size (Small) with modifications for larger sizes indicated in square brackets. The pattern includes a full back piece, front piece, and two sleeves. Sleeve length is consistent across all sizes at 44-45 cm (17¼-17¾ in), while full length from the shoulder point ranges from 58.5 cm (23 in) in the smallest size to 67 cm (26½ in) in the largest size. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and notation, with repeat instructions shown in parentheses indicating how many times a sequence should be worked.
