Jojoland Milanese Wrap
What Is Being Made
The Jojoland Milanese Wrap is a rectangular lace wrap designed by Jojoland International, LLC. This knitted accessory features elegant lace patterning throughout and is available in multiple size options. The finished wrap measures 24" × 76" (26" × 84") when made with Jojoland Rhythm yarn in the smaller or larger sizes, or 21" × 74" (25" × 84") when crafted with Jojoland Melody yarn. The wrap's generous dimensions make it versatile for draping over shoulders or wearing as a decorative shawlette.
Techniques Used
This wrap is constructed using lace knitting techniques combined with seamed construction and flat knitting methods. The pattern is worked flat on straight needles from a charted lace design, allowing knitters to follow the visual representation of stitches and pattern repeats. The lace pattern features yarn overs and decreases that create openwork sections throughout the fabric. A loop edging technique is applied to all edges, which involves slipping the first stitch and knitting the last stitch on right-side rows, while slipping the first stitch and purling the last stitch on wrong-side rows. This edging method creates a neat, finished appearance and helps prevent curling at the edges.
Stitches Used
The Milanese Wrap employs several fundamental knitting stitches to create its lace pattern:
- Knit stitch (k): The basic stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl stitch (p): Used in reverse-side rows and edging
- Yarn over (yo): Creates the openwork and lace holes characteristic of the design
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to balance yarn overs
- Purl two together (p2tog): A decrease worked on purl rows
- Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skp): A left-leaning decrease that creates directional shaping in the lace pattern
- Slip stitch (sl or s1): Used for the loop edging and pattern transitions
Materials and Tools
The Jojoland Milanese Wrap is worked in 100% wool yarn and offers flexibility in yarn choice depending on desired drape and finished dimensions. Knitters may select either Jojoland Rhythm yarn, which requires 10 balls for the smaller size or 13 balls for the larger size (with each ball containing 110 yards), or Jojoland Melody yarn, which requires 7 balls for the smaller size or 8 balls for the larger size (with each ball containing 220 yards).
Needle selection depends on the chosen yarn: U.S. size 5 (3.75mm) single point needles are used with Jojoland Melody yarn, while U.S. size 9 (5.5mm) single point needles are used with Jojoland Rhythm yarn. Additional materials include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and any finishing work.
Gauge and Sizing
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. When working with Jojoland Rhythm yarn, the gauge is 4 stitches × 5 rows = 1" square. When using Jojoland Melody yarn, the gauge is 4.5 stitches × 9 rows = 1" square. The pattern provides four size options with different cast-on stitch counts and repeat sequences to accommodate various preferences.
Skill Level
This wrap is rated as Easy+, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience. While lace knitting is involved, the pattern uses straightforward decreases and yarn overs, and the charted format provides clear visual guidance for following the stitch sequences.
