Jojoland Swirl Shawl

What Is Being Made

The Jojoland Swirl Shawl is a seamless, modular wrap constructed from individual hexagon motifs worked in the round. The finished shawl measures 68 inches by 20 inches, making it an ideal accessory for layering and draping. This intermediate-level knitting project combines multiple swirl hexagon units to create a cohesive, textured wrap suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Techniques Used

This shawl employs seamless construction and is worked in the round using double-pointed needles. The modular design approach allows knitters to create individual hexagon components that are later assembled into the finished wrap. The pattern utilizes a repeating decrease sequence combined with yarn overs to form the characteristic swirl and hexagon shaping. The closing technique includes a practical workaround for managing multiple stitches together, using a tapestry needle to thread through remaining stitches rather than attempting a challenging multi-stitch decrease.

Stitches Used

  • Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative openwork and increases
  • Knit (k) – fundamental stitch throughout the pattern
  • Purl (p) – used in early rounds for texture
  • K2tog (knit 2 together) – basic two-stitch decrease
  • K3tog (knit 3 together) – three-stitch decrease for shaping
  • K6tog (knit 6 together) – final closure decrease, simplified using tapestry needle method

Materials

The Jojoland Swirl Shawl requires 5 balls of Jojoland Melody Superwash Gloss yarn in color ms27, totaling 1100 yards. This yarn is 100% wool with 220 yards per ball. Knitters will need 4 mm/U.S. size 6 double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the hexagon motifs in the round. A tapestry needle is essential for the finishing technique. The gauge for each individual hexagon swirl is 4 inches at the widest points, and the project is rated as intermediate skill level.
