Jojoland Water Lily Knit Hat

What is Being Made

The Jojoland Water Lily is a seamless knit hat designed with a 19-inch circumference at the bottom and 8 inches in height. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat through the round using the in-the-round knitting technique, resulting in a garment without seams.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern requires 2 balls of Jojoland Rhythm or Rhythm Part B Superwash yarn, which is 100% wool. Each ball contains 110 yards, for a total of 220 yards needed to complete the project. The sample shown was made using Jojoland Rhythm Superwash in color RS74. Knitters will need 4 mm (U.S. size 6) double point needles to work this design.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 5 stitches by 7 rows per 1-inch square. The finished hat measures 19 inches around the circumference at the bottom opening and stands 8 inches tall, making it a standard adult hat size.

Techniques Used

The Water Lily hat is constructed using seamless, worked-in-the-round knitting techniques. This method eliminates the need for seaming after completion. The pattern begins with casting on 140 stitches distributed across three double point needles (40 stitches on the first needle, 60 on the second, and 40 on the third), then joins to work circularly. Stitches are rearranged during construction: the first stitch of needle 1 is knit through the back loop onto needle 3, the first stitch from needle 2 moves to the end of needle 1, and the first stitch from needle 3 moves to the end of needle 2. Increases occur at row 10 using yarn overs, bringing the total stitch count to 168 stitches (48 on the first needle, 72 on the second, and 48 on the third).

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Water Lily pattern features a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches worked in repeating rounds. Key stitches include:

  • Yarn over (yo): Creates decorative eyelet holes that contribute to the lace-like Water Lily motif
  • Knit through back loop (k tbl): Twisted stitches that add texture and definition throughout the pattern
  • Knit 2 together through back loop (k2tog tbl): A left-leaning decrease that pairs with yarn overs for the lace design
  • Purl (p): Reverse stockinette stitches that create contrast against the knit stitches

The pattern is worked from two charted sections: Chart A is repeated 7 times during the initial rounds, and Chart B is repeated 7 times for the remaining portion of the hat. Each round in the charted sections repeats a 14-stitch motif multiple times around the circumference. The combination of yarn overs and decreases creates the Water Lily lace pattern, while the twisted knit and purl stitches add visual and textural interest to the finished garment.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to work with double point needles, read charts, and manage increases and decreases in the round.
