Juniper Moon Farm Bessie Striped Pullover
What Is Being Made
The Bessie is a women's striped pullover sweater designed by Caroline Fryar Herriot. This knit garment features a sophisticated high bateau neckline, tidy turned hems for a polished finish, and faux set-in sleeves with saddle shoulders that create a flattering silhouette. The pullover is available in five sizes ranging from XS to XL, with finished bust circumferences from 32¾ inches (83 cm) to 41¼ inches (105 cm).
Knitting Techniques
The Bessie employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its refined construction:
- Jogless Stripes in the Round: This advanced technique eliminates the visible jog that typically occurs when changing colors in circular knitting. The method involves lifting the right half of the last stitch from the previous color onto the left-hand needle and knitting it together with the first stitch of the new color round, creating seamless color transitions.
- Circular knitting in the round: The garment is worked circularly using circular needles and double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless construction without side seams.
- Set-in sleeves with saddle shoulders: The faux set-in sleeve construction with saddle shoulder shaping creates a tailored, fitted appearance.
- Turned hems: The hem is created using a turning round (purl round) to establish a fold line, resulting in a neat, finished edge when the hem is sewn down.
Stitches Used
The Bessie primarily uses fundamental knitting stitches combined in a straightforward pattern:
- Stockinette stitch (St st): The main fabric stitch, created by knitting all stitches in the round, producing a smooth, classic knit surface.
- Garter stitch: Used for the initial hem ribbing (5 knit rounds before the turning round).
- Make one increase (m1): Used during the set-up round to distribute stitches evenly across the body.
- Knit stitches (k): The foundation of the stripe pattern, with color changes creating the visual striping effect.
Stripe Pattern
The Bessie features a repeating 10-round stripe pattern worked in two colors. The pattern alternates between the main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) in a specific sequence: three rounds of MC, one round of CC, one round of MC, three rounds of CC, one round of MC, and one round of CC, then the pattern repeats. This creates subtle, balanced horizontal stripes throughout the garment.
Materials and Gauge
The Bessie is knit using Juniper Moon Farm Herriot yarn in two colorways: color #06 River Birch (main color) and color #08 Sycamore (contrasting color). The pattern requires 4 hanks of each color for sizes XS through L, and 5 hanks of each color for size XL. The yarn is worked on US size 5 (3.75mm) needles, including a 24-inch circular needle for the body, double-pointed needles for the sleeves, and an optional 16-inch circular needle. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch worked in the round. Additional notions include stitch markers, stitch holders, waste yarn, and a tapestry needle for finishing.
