Juniper Moon Farm Breathless Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Breathless Pullover is an intermediate-level raglan sweater designed by Kathleen Dames Herriot as part of the Gamine Collection. Inspired by Jean Seberg's iconic photo in a cozy sweater, this pullover features a distinctive cowl neck and two intriguing cable patterns that create visual interest throughout the garment. The design is available in seven sizes ranging from X-Small to 3X-Large, with finished bust circumferences from 32 inches (81.25 cm) to 56 inches (142.25 cm), making it suitable for a wide range of body types.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs several intermediate-level techniques that add depth and sophistication to the finished sweater. The construction uses raglan shaping, a classic method where sleeve increases are worked evenly from the neckline down to create seamless armholes and a flattering fit. The pattern incorporates circular knitting worked in the round using a 29-inch circular needle for the main body sections, which eliminates seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric. The pattern also includes small circumference knitting using double-pointed needles or the preferred method for working tight areas, typically used for the ribbed cuffs and neckline. Cable crossing is a key technique featured throughout, with specific instructions for working twisted 1-over-1 crosses through the back loop on even rounds to create contrast with the 2-stitch cables.

Stitches Used

The Breathless Pullover utilizes a focused selection of stitches appropriate for intermediate knitters. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, worked at a gauge of 22 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). The signature design element is the Plaid Lattice stitch pattern, a complex cable pattern that measures 44 stitches to 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) and features interlocking 1-over-1 cable crosses and 2-stitch cables that create a sophisticated lattice effect. Additional stitches include ribbing for the cuffs and neckline, knit and purl stitches for texture variation, and decreases worked with ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) methods for shaping the raglan armholes. Increases are worked using m1L (make one left) and m1R (make one right) techniques to add stitches evenly during the raglan construction.

Materials

The Breathless Pullover is designed to be worked in Juniper Moon Farm Herriot yarn, a premium fiber available in beautiful colorways. The pattern requires 5 to 10 skeins of 100-gram weight yarn depending on the finished size, with smaller sizes (X-Small through Large) requiring 5 to 8 skeins and larger sizes (X-Large through 3X-Large) requiring 9 to 10 skeins. The pattern features two stunning color options: Hydrangea (#1043) shown on the cover, or Polar Frost (#1020) featured on the alternate cover. Knitting needles include a size US 6 (4 mm) circular needle measuring 29 inches (73.75 cm) long for working the main body in the round, and a set of size US 5 (4 mm) double-pointed needles for working smaller circumferences such as cuffs and the cowl neckline. Additional notions include a cable needle for working the cable crosses, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and raglan increases, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction.
