What Is Being Made

The Butterfly Ruffled Sweater Twinset is a coordinated pair of knitted garments designed by Karen Boykin Findley. This collection features two complementary crew neck sweaters: a delicate ruffle-front sweater paired with a matching quilt-patterned crew neck sweater. The twinset offers versatile styling options, allowing knitters to create two distinct yet coordinated pieces in a single project. Available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, the finished chest measurements for the crew neck sweater range from 35¾ inches (91 cm) to 56¾ inches (144 cm), with corresponding length measurements from 17¾ inches (45 cm) to 21½ inches (54.5 cm).

Knitting Techniques

Both sweaters in this twinset are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suited to intermediate crafters. The garments are worked flat on circular needles, meaning they are knitted in rows rather than in the round, allowing for easier stitch manipulation and pattern work. The pieces are then seamed together to create the finished garment, a traditional method that provides clean, professional-looking seams. The ruffled sweater is notably knit side-to-side, a directional construction method that creates the sweater by working horizontally across the width of the garment rather than from bottom to top, which can create interesting visual effects and simplify certain stitch patterns.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

This project employs several key stitches and stitch patterns to create its distinctive aesthetic. Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of much of the garment, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture. The crew neck sweater features the Royal Quilting Stitch, an advanced decorative stitch pattern that creates a textured, quilt-like appearance. This stitch is worked over a multiple of six stitches plus five, combining slip stitches with contrasting color work to produce dimensional visual interest. The Royal Quilting Stitch incorporates slipped stitches worked with yarn held in back (wyib), which creates the characteristic quilted effect. Additionally, the pattern includes ribbing for fitted edges and cuffs, which provides elasticity and helps garments maintain their shape. Shaping techniques include m1 (make one) increases, which add stitches invisibly within the fabric, and ssk (slip, slip, knit) decreases, which create subtle left-leaning decreases used for shaping armholes and necklines.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This twinset is designed to be knitted with Juniper Moon Farm FiNdLey yarn held double, meaning two strands of yarn are worked simultaneously to create a thicker fabric. The main color (MC) requires five to seven balls of FiNdLey in color #119 Greens/yellow, depending on the chosen size, while the contrasting color (CC) requires one ball of FiNdLey in color #33 Bright yellow for the Royal Quilting Stitch pattern work. The yarn is held double throughout to achieve the specified gauges.

The project requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different stitch patterns and gauges. US 2 (2.75 mm) needles are used for ribbing sections, which are worked at a tighter gauge to create elastic edges. US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles in both 24-inch (60 cm) and 32-inch (80 cm) lengths are used for the Royal Quilting Stitch sections, achieving a gauge of 32 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles in 24-inch (60 cm) length are used for Stockinette stitch sections, which work at a gauge of 24 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). US 10 (6.0 mm) circular needles in 24-inch (60 cm) length are specifically designated for the ruffle construction, creating a looser, more open fabric for the decorative ruffle element.
