Juniper Moon Farm Cross Country Pullover - The Yorkshire Collection

Garment Overview

The Cross Country pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Joann Rogers that combines traditional and contemporary styling elements. This pullover features a wide collar with a nod to classic design paired with subtle meandering cables that provide modern visual interest. The sweater is intended as a versatile piece suitable for outdoor activities like hiking as well as casual indoor wear. It is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 33 inches to 54 inches and lengths from 21¼ inches to 26½ inches.

Knitting Techniques

This pullover is knit in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless construction. The sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques including increases using the make-one method (m1), decreases using the slip-slip-knit (ssk) technique, and cable work. The cable panels are the signature design element, created by slipping stitches to a cable needle and holding them either in front or in back before knitting, producing the characteristic twisted rope-like texture.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stockinette stitch, worked in the round, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The defining feature is the Cable Panel, a 12-stitch pattern that repeats over 8 rows. This cable panel alternates between rows of knit stitches and cable cross rows. The cable crosses are worked by slipping 3 stitches to a cable needle and holding them in front while knitting the next 3 stitches, then knitting the held stitches (creating a left-leaning cable), or holding the cable needle in back for a right-leaning cable. The Cable Panel Shift Guide indicates that cable panels shift toward the center of the pullover on every fourth round, creating the meandering effect described in the design.

Materials and Yarn

The Cross Country pullover is knit in Juniper Moon Farm Herriot Great yarn, described as luxurious and soft. The yarn quantity required ranges from 7 hanks for the smallest size (XS) to 11 hanks for the largest size (3X). The sample shown is knit in color #103 Caramel. Herriot Great is a worsted-weight yarn suitable for the gauge requirements of this pattern.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches in length for the main knitting, along with matching double-pointed needles for working smaller sections. A smaller needle size, US 8 (5 mm) circular needles, is also needed, likely for ribbed edgings or cuffs. Additional notions include stitch markers in two colors (designated A and B) for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections, a cable needle for working the cable stitches, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Gauge and Construction Details

The pattern specifies a gauge of 17½ stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, worked in the round on the larger needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements. The construction involves working cable panels that shift inward toward the center of the pullover, with the number of shift rounds varying by size from 10 to 15 times, creating the dynamic cable movement characteristic of the Cross Country design.
