Project Overview

The Gudrun Hat and Mittens set is a Nordic-inspired knitting project designed by Claudia Wersing. This collection features a coordinated hat and mittens combination worked in the round using traditional stranded colorwork techniques. The hat is available in three sizes to fit head circumferences of 18, 19¾, and 21¼ inches, while the mittens are offered in one universal size.

What Is Being Made

• Hat: A fitted, round-crown hat with a ribbed cuff and Nordic patterned body, finished with a length of 11½ to 11¾ inches depending on size
• Mittens: A coordinating pair of mittens designed to complement the hat's colorwork aesthetic

Techniques Used

This project employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create its finished garments:

• Bottom-Up Construction: Both the hat and mittens are worked from the cuff upward, beginning with cast-on stitches and progressing toward the crown or cuff edge
• Worked in the Round: The pieces are knitted circularly using circular needles and double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating seamless, tubular fabric
• Stranded Colorwork (Fair Isle): The pattern incorporates the Fair Isle technique, where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create the Nordic design. The chart shows a 6-stitch pattern repeat that is repeated 13 to 17 times per round depending on size, spanning 35 rows of patterned work

Stitches Used

• Ribbed Knit: A 1×1 rib (knit one, purl one) worked in rounds for approximately 1¼ inches, creating an elastic cuff that helps the hat stay securely in place
• Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch structure, worked in rounds by knitting every round. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, V-textured fabric and serves as the base for both the solid-color sections and the patterned colorwork sections

Materials

Yarn: The project uses Juniper Moon Farm Herriot Great yarn, a worsted-weight fiber. Three colors are specified:

• Color 104 Charcoal Grey (A): 2 hanks of 100g each, used as the main color
• Color 118 Redwood City (B): 1 hank of 100g, used as a contrast color
• Color 124 Llama Rush (C): 1 hank of 100g, used as a contrast color

Needles and Notions: The pattern recommends US 10/6mm circular needles measuring 24 inches long for the main hat body, paired with a set of 5 double-pointed US 10/6mm needles for working the crown decreases. Stitch markers (6 to 10 depending on size) are used to mark pattern repeats and decrease points. The pattern notes that LYKKE® needles are recommended for best results.

Gauge

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The pattern specifies 16 stitches and 20 rows to 4 inches over Stockinette stitch, and 17 stitches and 18 rows to 4 inches over patterned Stockinette stitch, both measured using US 10/6mm needles.

Finished Measurements

Hat: The hat is designed to fit head circumferences of 18 (19¾, 21¼) inches, with actual finished circumferences of 19 (20½, 22) inches. The length ranges from 11½ inches for sizes Small and Medium to 11¾ inches for size Large.
