What is Being Made

The Mica top is a summer knit garment designed by Claudia Wersing as part of the Summer Vibes Collection. This pullover sweater is available in three size ranges: Small/Medium, Large/X-Large, and 2X-Large/3X-Large, with finished bust circumferences ranging from 39½ inches to 55 inches and length measurements from 28¼ to 30 inches. The pattern accommodates multiple finished sizes through double-sizing notation, allowing knitters to select the appropriate dimensions for their desired fit.

Techniques Used

The Mica top employs bottom-up construction, a popular method where the garment is knitted from the lower edge upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The finished pieces are then seamed together to create the complete garment. This approach allows for straightforward shaping and customization of fit as the knitter progresses upward through the body and sleeves.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The design features multiple ribbed stitch patterns that create vertical texture and structure throughout the garment. The pattern includes five distinct ribbing variations, each creating different proportions of knit and purl columns:

• 4x11 Ribbing: Alternates 4 purl stitches with 11 knit stitches, creating a bold vertical stripe effect
• 4x9 Ribbing: Combines 4 purl stitches with 9 knit stitches for a slightly narrower knit column
• 4x7 Ribbing: Features 4 purl stitches alternating with 7 knit stitches
• 4x5 Ribbing: Creates a more balanced pattern with 4 purl and 5 knit stitches
• 4x3 Ribbing and 4x1 Ribbing: Progressively narrower knit sections for refined detailing

These ribbed patterns are worked flat in rows, with the first row establishing the stitch pattern on the right side and subsequent rows worked as the stitches appear. Decreases within the ribbing are strategically executed by working the first knit stitch of a knit-rib section together with the previous purl stitch as a purl two-together decrease, maintaining pattern integrity during shaping.

Materials and Tools

The Mica top is knitted using Juniper Moon Farm Zooey yarn in the colorway Morganite (color 56). Yardage requirements are 4 balls for the two smallest size ranges and 5 balls for the largest sizes, with each ball weighing 100 grams. The pattern calls for two sets of knitting needles in different sizes to achieve the required gauges: Size US 2½/3mm needles for the main fabric, which should produce a gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rows over a 4-inch square when working 4x11 Ribbing, and Size US 1½/2.5mm needles for ribbed sections requiring a tighter gauge of 25 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in 1x1 ribbing. A thin elastic band is also required as a notional component for the finished garment.
