Antonia Wrap by Claudia Wersing

What Is Being Made

The Antonia Wrap is an intermediate-level triangular shawl from the Winter Breeze Collection by Juniper Moon Farm. This is a substantial wrap garment measuring 53 inches (135 cm) across the cast-off edge and 86½ inches (220 cm along the left side), making it a generous accessory suitable for layering and warmth. The design features a sophisticated color-blocking construction that showcases multiple yarn colors in a carefully planned sequence throughout the project.

Techniques Used

The Antonia Wrap employs fundamental shawl construction techniques centered on strategic increases and decreases to create the triangular shape. The pattern uses paired shaping methods: increases worked on the right side of the fabric and corresponding decreases on the wrong side maintain stitch count while creating the geometric expansion characteristic of triangular shawl designs. The wrap is worked from a small cast-on of 7 stitches that gradually expands to 247 stitches before a final decrease row brings the stitch count to 235 stitches for binding off.

The color-blocking technique is integral to the design, requiring the knitter to work in a specific sequence of yarn colors across multiple rows. This involves carrying colors not in use and managing multiple yarn balls throughout the project. The color sequence repeats twice after the initial setup rows, creating a balanced and intentional color distribution across the finished wrap.

Stitches Used

The Antonia Wrap is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the foundational stitch that creates the smooth, classic fabric texture. Key stitch techniques include:

  • M1K (Make 1 stitch knitwise): An increase method worked on right-side rows by picking up the running thread between stitches from front to back and knitting through the back loop, creating an invisible increase that blends seamlessly into the stockinette fabric.
  • M1P (Make 1 stitch purlwise): The wrong-side equivalent of M1K, picking up the running thread and purling through the back loop to maintain consistent shaping on the reverse side of the fabric.
  • P2tog (Purl 2 together): A decrease stitch worked on wrong-side rows that reduces stitch count while maintaining the paired shaping structure.
  • Slipped stitches: The pattern uses slip stitches at the edges (slipping 3 stitches knitwise on right-side rows and purlwise on wrong-side rows) to create neat, finished selvage edges.

Materials

The Antonia Wrap is constructed using four 100-gram hanks of Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia yarn in coordinating colors: shade 123 Turquoise (A), shade 115 Denim (B), shade 122 Charoite (C), and shade 106 Juniper (D). The yarn is worked on one pair of size US 6 (4mm) knitting needles. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 28 rows over a 4-inch (10 cm) square in stockinette stitch using the specified needle size, which helps determine the final dimensions and drape of the completed wrap.
