Juniper Moon Farm Lily Sweater

What is Being Made

The Lily sweater is a lightweight knitted pullover designed by Ursula O'Connor as part of the Tropical Summer Collection. This garment is tailored for a comfortable, relaxed fit with finished bust measurements ranging from 37 to 43 inches across four size options: Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large. The sweater features a classic crew neckline and is constructed with a total length ranging from 22 to 25 inches, making it an ideal choice for warm-weather layering or standalone wear.

Techniques Used

The Lily sweater is worked flat on straight needles, meaning the front, back, and sleeves are knitted as separate flat pieces rather than in the round. The garment is constructed using a bottom-up method, beginning with the back piece cast on at the lower edge and progressing upward to the armholes and shoulders. All pieces are subsequently seamed together to create the finished garment, which is a traditional approach that allows for precise shaping and professional finishing.

The pattern incorporates strategic decreasing and increasing techniques to create shaping at the waist. The back piece begins with decreases at each end on rows 5, 11, 17, 23, 29, and 35, followed by increases at each end on rows 41, 47, 53, 59, 65, and 71. This shaping creates a fitted silhouette while maintaining stitch count. Armhole shaping is achieved through casting off stitches at the beginning of rows followed by single-stitch decreases over subsequent rows. Shoulder and neckline shaping involves strategic cast-offs to create proper garment structure.

Stitches Used

The Lily sweater features a distinctive stitch pattern worked over a two-row repeat. Row 1 (Right Side) consists of: purl 3 stitches, then repeat the sequence of yarn to back, slip 1 stitch purlwise, yarn to front, purl 3 stitches to the end of the row. Row 2 (Wrong Side) is worked as: knit 3 stitches, then repeat the sequence of purl 1 stitch, knit 3 stitches to the end of the row.

This two-row pattern repeat creates a textured, slipped-stitch fabric that provides visual interest and subtle dimensionality. The slip stitch technique—where a stitch is moved from one needle to another without being worked—combined with the yarn overs (yarn to back and yarn to front) creates a refined, open texture characteristic of summer-weight garments. The pattern is maintained consistently throughout the back, front, and sleeve pieces, ensuring visual cohesion across the finished sweater.

Materials

The Lily sweater is knitted using Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus Rainbow yarn in colorway 213 Island Coast. The yardage requirement is 4 to 5 cakes of 100-gram weight, depending on size selection, providing sufficient yardage for all garment pieces.

Two pairs of US 5mm (US 8) knitting needles and US 5.5mm (US 9) knitting needles are required. The smaller needles are used for ribbed edgings or cuffs to create elasticity and a neat finish, while the larger US 9/5.5mm needles are used for the main pattern work. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 16 stitches and 22 rows over a 4-inch (10-centimeter) square using the US 9/5.5mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
