Juniper Moon Farm Norah Pullover

What is Being Made

The Norah Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Melissa Leapman as part of the Berkshires Collection. This pullover is a classic crew-neck style garment available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X-Large, with finished bust measurements from 35 inches (89cm) to 61 inches (155cm). The pullover features a finished length of approximately 24 to 26.5 inches depending on size, providing a comfortable, versatile fit suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Techniques Used

The Norah Pullover is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create visual interest and structural integrity:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and modifications during the knitting process.
  • Worked Flat: The pattern is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join the pieces together.
  • Seamed Construction: Individual pieces are knitted separately and then seamed together, creating clean, professional-looking seams throughout the garment.
  • Cable Work: Multiple cable panels are integrated into the design, requiring the use of cable needles to create twisted stitch patterns that add depth and visual texture to the pullover.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Norah Pullover incorporates several distinct stitch patterns to create its finished appearance:

  • Double Seed Stitch: The primary background stitch used throughout the garment, worked with the larger needles. This textured stitch creates a reversible, fabric-like appearance and is knitted at a gauge of 18 stitches and 29 rows per 4 inches (10cm) when blocked.
  • Cable Panels: Three different cable panel designs are featured in the pattern:
    • Cable Panel A: An 18-stitch panel measuring 2¾ inches (7cm) in width
    • Cable Panel B: A 14-stitch panel measuring 1½ inches (4cm) in width
    • Cable Panel C: A 40-stitch panel measuring 6 inches (15cm) in width
All cable panels are worked with the larger needles to maintain consistent gauge and appearance.
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used in specific areas as indicated by the pattern instructions for contrast and structure.

Materials and Yarn

The Norah Pullover is designed to be knitted with Juniper Moon Farm Bluefaced Leicester yarn in color 07 Crimson. The pattern requires 7 to 12 hanks of yarn depending on the size being knitted, with each hank weighing 100 grams. Bluefaced Leicester is a premium wool yarn known for its softness, luster, and excellent stitch definition, making it ideal for displaying the cable and textured stitch patterns featured in this design.

Needles and Notions

The pattern calls for two different needle sizes to create proper gauge and fabric weight distribution:

  • Size US 5 (3.75mm) needles: Used for ribbing or other sections requiring a tighter gauge.
  • Size US 7 (4.5mm) needles: The primary needles used for the main body of the sweater, or a size as needed to obtain the specified gauge.

Additional notions required include two cable needles for managing the cable stitches and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases and decreases throughout the construction.

Pattern Format

The Norah Pullover pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The pattern includes comprehensive instructions for all six sizes, with size-specific modifications clearly noted in parentheses throughout the written directions.
