Marlowe Baby Jacket by Melissa Leapman
What is Being Made
The Marlowe is a baby jacket from the Pasadena Collection, designed by Melissa Leapman. This double-breasted cardigan is crafted for infants in sizes 6, 12, 18, and 24 months, with finished chest measurements ranging from 21½ inches (54.5cm) to 28 inches (71cm) and lengths from 11½ inches (29cm) to 14½ inches (37cm). The jacket features a sophisticated double-breasted closure with two columns of three buttons positioned near the top of the overlapping fronts, making it both functional and stylish for baby wear.
Techniques Used
The Marlowe is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, and worked-flat approach. The garment is knitted in individual pieces—including the back, fronts, and sleeves—then assembled together through seaming. This method allows for precise shaping and control over the fit. The pattern incorporates strategic increases and decreases to shape the armholes and neckline. Buttonholes are worked into the front pieces to accommodate the six buttons that secure the double-breasted front closure. The e-wrap cast-on technique is used to add stitches over bound-off sections during construction.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Marlowe is the Nubby Pattern, which creates a textured, visually interesting fabric. This pattern is worked over an odd number of stitches and repeats over four rows. The pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence: Rows 1 and 3 (right-side rows) are worked as P1, *K1, P1, repeating to the end; Row 2 is worked as K1, *P1, K1, repeating to the end; and Row 4 repeats Row 1. This creates a characteristic nubby texture that adds dimension and visual appeal to the finished garment. The pattern is maintained consistently throughout all pieces of the jacket.
Materials and Tools
The Marlowe is knitted using Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus yarn in colorway 41 Cornflower. Two 100-gram hanks of yarn are required to complete the jacket. The yarn is worked on US 8/5mm knitting needles, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when the Nubby Pattern is blocked. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and six buttons measuring 5/8 inch (1.5mm) in diameter for the double-breasted closure. Proper gauge checking is emphasized as essential before beginning the project to ensure the finished jacket meets the intended measurements.
