Juliana Shawl by Melissa Leapman

What is Being Made

The Juliana is a triangular shawl from the Aspen Collection, designed by Melissa Leapman. This knitted accessory features a generous wingspan of 62 inches (157.5 cm) with a center length of 35 inches (89 cm), making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders.

Techniques Used

This shawl is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create both visual interest and structural shaping:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The shawl is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the piece as it grows and adjust the final size if desired.
  • Flat Knitting: The piece is worked back-and-forth on a circular needle rather than in the round, giving the knitter full control over each row.
  • Seamless Design: No seaming is required; the shawl is completed as a single continuous piece.
  • Striped Colorwork: A two-color garter-based mosaic pattern creates the striped effect, with colors alternating every two rows throughout the main fabric.
  • Strategic Shaping: The triangular silhouette is achieved through increases worked at each end of specific rows. The pattern uses a rhythmic increase sequence, adding one stitch using the kfb (knit into front and back) method on 7 out of every 9 right-side rows, alternating between 3 out of 4 rows and 4 out of 5 rows as indicated in the accompanying charts.
  • Border Application: After the main fabric is complete, side borders and a top border are picked up and worked separately in reverse stockinette stitch for a finished edge.

Stitches Used

The Juliana shawl employs a focused selection of fundamental knitting stitches:

  • Mosaic Pattern Stitches: The primary fabric uses a garter-based mosaic pattern, which combines knit and slip stitches to create the two-color striped effect without requiring complex colorwork techniques.
  • Knit Stitch: The foundation stitch used throughout the main fabric and borders.
  • Purl Stitch: Used in the border sections and as part of the stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch sequences.
  • Slip Stitch: Part of the mosaic pattern construction, worked purlwise with yarn held to the wrong side.
  • Increase Stitch (kfb): The knit-into-front-and-back increase creates the shaping at the edges without leaving visible holes.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Used for the side and top borders, creating a smooth, finished appearance.

Materials

The Juliana shawl is designed to be worked in Juniper Moon Farm Herriot yarn, a worsted-weight fiber. The pattern calls for 3 x 100g skeins each of two colors: color 1001 Black River Stone and color 1044 Claret, providing a sophisticated two-tone palette. A US Size 8 (5 mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 cm) long is required to accommodate the large number of stitches as the shawl expands. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 44 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when the mosaic pattern is blocked, ensuring proper drape and finished dimensions.
