Juniper Moon Farm Avery Hat and Scarf Collection by Melissa Leapman

Overview

The Avery collection features a coordinating hat and scarf set designed by Melissa Leapman. Both pieces showcase a sophisticated striping technique that gradually transitions color throughout the project, creating a dynamic visual effect. This downloadable PDF pattern offers two complementary accessories that can be made individually or as a matching pair.

Scarf Design and Construction

The scarf measures 7½ inches wide by 72½ inches long (19 x 184 centimeters), making it a versatile length suitable for various styling options. The scarf is worked flat from the bottom up, beginning with a cast-on of 34 stitches. The construction employs a 2x2 Ribbed stitch pattern as the foundation, which creates vertical texture and natural elasticity.

The scarf features an intricate striping technique that evolves throughout the piece. The pattern works through a series of color transitions using two colors from Juniper Moon Farm Mallow yarn: Raven (color 101) and Graphite (color 102). The stripe sequence progresses systematically: [12 rows Raven, 2 rows Graphite] repeated 4 times, followed by [10 rows Raven, 4 rows Graphite] repeated 4 times, continuing through [8 rows Raven, 6 rows Graphite], [6 rows Raven, 8 rows Graphite], [4 rows Raven, 10 rows Graphite], and finally [2 rows Raven, 12 rows Graphite], each repeated 4 times. This creates a gradual color shift from predominantly Raven to predominantly Graphite across the length of the scarf.

Hat Design and Construction

The hat is offered in two sizes: Small with a 19¼-inch circumference (49 centimeters) and Large with a 21½-inch circumference (55 centimeters). The hat height measures 10 inches (25.5 centimeters) for Small and 10½ inches (27 centimeters) for Large. The hat is constructed using the seamless, worked-in-the-round technique, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a polished, professional finish.

The hat begins with a cast-on of 72 stitches for Small or 80 stitches for Large, worked on a 16-inch circular needle. Like the scarf, the hat features a 2x2 Ribbed stitch pattern combined with the same evolving striping technique. The ribbed base provides structure and a fitted appearance. The hat is worked for 46 rounds (Small) or 48 rounds (Large) before shaping the crown.

Crown shaping is accomplished through strategic decreases worked in pattern. The pattern uses ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) decreases to create a symmetrical crown reduction. The decreases are distributed evenly around the hat to maintain the ribbed pattern integrity while reducing stitches to close the crown opening. Double-pointed needles are introduced when the circular needle becomes too crowded to work comfortably.

Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs several essential knitting techniques:

  • 2x2 Ribbed Stitch: A fundamental stitch pattern alternating knit and purl stitches in groups of two, creating vertical columns that provide elasticity and structure to both garments
  • Stripes: Color changes are worked by alternating between two yarn colors in progressively shifting proportions, creating a gradient effect
  • Seamless, In-the-Round Construction: The hat is worked circularly on needles to create a continuous tube without seams
  • Flat Construction: The scarf is worked back and forth on straight needles
  • Decrease Techniques: Ssk and k2tog stitches are used for crown shaping, creating paired decreases that maintain pattern symmetry
  • Stitch Markers: Used to mark the beginning of rounds and maintain pattern placement

Materials and Gauge

The pattern calls for Juniper Moon Farm Mallow yarn in two colors: Raven (color 101) and Graphite (color 102). Each color requires 2 balls of 75 grams each when making both the hat and scarf together. The scarf uses only a small amount of the second color ball.
