Juniper Moon Farm Dubloons Hat and Cowl Collection
What is Being Made
The Dubloons collection features two coordinating knitwear designs by Lynette Meek: a fitted hat and a generous cowl. Both pieces showcase the distinctive visual appeal of brioche knitting combined with corrugated ribbing and cable details. The hat is available in three sizes (Small, Medium, and Large) with finished circumferences of 18, 21, and 24 inches respectively. The cowl features a circumference of 27 inches and a width of approximately 12 inches, though it can be customized shorter or longer through the addition or subtraction of pattern repeats.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques that work together to create a warm, textured garment with professional construction:
- Worked in the Round: Both the hat and cowl are constructed seamlessly using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric.
- Bottom-Up Construction: The pieces are knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easy customization of length and straightforward pattern progression.
- Two-Colour Long-Tail Cast-On: The pattern begins with a specialized cast-on technique that incorporates both the main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) yarn held together. The CC yarn is held over the thumb while the MC yarn is held over the index finger, creating a decorative and secure foundation edge.
- Corrugated Ribbing: This technique creates a much firmer ribbing than standard ribbing by working knit stitches in one colour and purl stitches in a second colour. The carried yarns across the back of the work create minimal give to the rib, requiring the ribbing to be stretched open horizontally as knitting progresses to maintain proper gauge and elasticity.
- Cables in Brioche: The pattern features cable work executed within brioche knitting. Brioche cables require stitches to be worked in pairs (one knit stitch and one purl stitch), which means cables can only be worked over multiples of 4 stitches. In this pattern, each cable is worked over 8 stitches, with cables offset throughout the pattern repeat to create visual interest and texture.
- Stripes: The two-colour work creates striped effects throughout the garment, particularly visible in the corrugated ribbing sections.
Stitches Used
The Dubloons pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in sophisticated ways. Knit and purl stitches form the foundation of both the corrugated ribbing and the brioche cable sections. Cable crosses (such as C4F, C8F, and C12F) are employed to create the textured cable patterns, though the pattern specifies that cables in brioche are limited to multiples of 4 stitches to maintain the integrity of the knit-purl pairs. The brioche stitch structure itself—combining knit and purl stitches in alternating fashion—creates the characteristic brioche texture throughout both pieces.
Materials
The Dubloons collection calls for Juniper Moon Farm PATAGONIA yarn in two colorways. The main color (MC) is color 126 Sequoia, with 2 x 100g skeins required. The contrasting color (CC) is color 113 Cinnamon, also requiring 2 x 100g skeins. This yarn choice provides the warmth and durability necessary for the brioche and corrugated ribbing techniques.
The hat requires US 2½ (3mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches long for the ribbed cuff, and US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and double-pointed needle formats for the main body and crown shaping. The cowl uses US 2½ (3mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches long for the ribbed edge and US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in 24-inch length for the main body. Cable needles are also required for executing the cable crosses throughout the pattern.
