Juniper Moon Farm Riley: Kid Sweater, Hat & Slipover Collection

Overview

The Riley collection by Ursula McGrath is a three-piece set designed for children aged 2–11 years, featuring a coordinated sweater, slipover, and hat. This downloadable knitting pattern is part of the Rainbow Summer Collection and offers multiple size options to accommodate growing children from chest sizes 22 to 30 inches (56 to 76 centimeters).

Sweater

Construction & Fit: The sweater is worked flat and seamed, using a bottom-up construction method. It is designed to fit chest measurements of 22 to 30 inches (56 to 76 centimeters) with finished widths ranging from 24 to 31½ inches (61 to 80 centimeters). The length varies from 14 to 20 inches (35 to 51 centimeters) depending on size, while sleeve length ranges from 9 to 15 inches (23 to 38 centimeters).

Stitch Techniques & Pattern Details: The sweater features stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern, combined with horizontal stripes created by alternating between two main colors. The design incorporates structured shaping at the armholes and shoulders, with cast-off decreases that create a fitted garment. Armhole shaping is achieved by casting off 3 stitches at the beginning of two rows, followed by single-stitch decreases over three rows. Shoulder shaping uses progressive cast-offs to create a sloped shoulder line, and back neck shaping is included to ensure proper fit around the neckline.

Yarn & Materials: The sweater requires Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus yarn in four colors: Bing Cherry (color 43), White Lion (color 16), Goldenrod (color 38), and Narwhale (color 22). Yardage requirements vary by size, with most sizes requiring 1 × 100g ball per color, though larger sizes may need 2 × 100g balls of Narwhale.

Slipover

Construction & Fit: The slipover is a sleeveless layering piece with the same finished width and length measurements as the sweater (24 to 31½ inches wide, 14 to 20 inches long), making it a versatile companion piece. Like the sweater, it is worked flat and seamed using bottom-up construction.

Yarn & Materials: The slipover uses Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus in Cornflower (color 41) and White Lion (color 16), with yardage varying by size.

Hat

Construction & Fit: The hat is designed as a coordinating accessory and is available in three sizes with finished widths of 15½ to 20 inches (39 to 51 centimeters).

Yarn & Materials: The hat pattern specifies using leftover yarn from the sweater, making it an economical use of materials from the main garment.

Key Knitting Techniques

  • Bottom-Up Construction: All pieces are knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easy length adjustments and intuitive fitting during the knitting process.
  • Flat Knitting: Pieces are worked on straight needles in rows rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join the finished pieces together.
  • Striping: Horizontal color stripes are created by changing yarn colors at regular intervals, adding visual interest and utilizing the multiple colors in the Cumulus yarn palette.
  • Seaming: After individual pieces are completed, they are sewn together using mattress stitch or similar seaming techniques to create the finished garment.
  • Shaping Techniques: The pattern employs cast-offs and decreases to create armholes, shoulders, and neckline shaping, resulting in a well-fitted children's garment.

Yarn Information

All pieces in the Riley collection use Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus, a yarn well-suited for children's garments. The specific colors employed are Bing Cherry, White Lion, Goldenrod, Narwhale, and Cornflower, offering a vibrant palette appropriate for the Rainbow Summer Collection theme.
