Juniper Moon Farm Jamie Kid Sweater, Tunic & Hat

What is Being Made

The Jamie collection from Juniper Moon Farm features three coordinated pieces designed for children: a pullover sweater, a tunic, and a matching hat. All three garments are part of the Rainbow Summer Collection and are designed by Ursula McGrath. The pieces are sized for children ages 2-3 through 10-11 years, with finished chest measurements ranging from 22 to 30 inches (56 to 76 centimeters). The sweater and tunic are offered as alternative length options, allowing makers to choose between a shorter sweater version or an extended tunic length. The hat is sized separately to coordinate with each sweater or tunic size.

Techniques Used

The Jamie designs employ several intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The garments are worked from the lower edge upward, allowing for easy length adjustments and fitting as you progress.
  • Worked flat: All pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, then seamed together at completion.
  • Seamed construction: Pieces are assembled using seaming techniques, creating clean, finished edges where sleeves attach to the body and side seams close the garment.
  • Intarsia colorwork: The designs incorporate intarsia techniques, where different colors are worked into distinct blocks or sections. The pattern instructions reference beginning new balls of yarn at different points in the color sequence to create the multicolor effects.
  • Striped and color-blocked patterns: The garments feature alternating blocks of color worked in specific pattern sequences, creating the distinctive Rainbow Summer Collection aesthetic.

Stitches Used

The Jamie patterns utilize fundamental knitting stitches combined with specialty abbreviations:

  • Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch forming the fabric base.
  • Purl stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition.
  • Double moss stitch (Db.ms.st): A textured stitch that adds visual depth and structure to the colorwork sections, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence.
  • Decreases: The pattern uses knit two together (K2tog) decreases to shape the neckline and shoulders.
  • Cast-off stitches: Used extensively for shoulder shaping and neckline finishing.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Jamie collection is designed to showcase Juniper Moon Farm's premium yarn offerings:

  • For the Tunic: Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus Degradé in color 411 Wisteria Park, requiring 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) x 100g skeins depending on size.
  • For the Sweater: Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus Rainbow in color 218 Sahara Skies, also requiring 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) x 100g skeins by size.
  • For the Hat: 50 (55, 60) grams of yarn, sized to match the corresponding sweater or tunic size.
  • Needles: The pattern calls for a pair of US 8 (5mm) knitting needles and a pair of US 9 (5.5mm) knitting needles, allowing for gauge control and varied stitch textures throughout the design.
