Vienna is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and seamed with a scalloping lace pattern alternating with multicolor garter stitch stripes for a fun and vibrant finished project. Zooey and Zooey Stripes coordinate beautifully in this design, adding depth and interest from two solid colors of Zooey and one colorway of Zooey Stripes. Vienna Top and Sweater by Ursula McGrath

What Is Being Made

Vienna is a versatile knitted design available in two versions: a fitted top and a full sweater. Part of the Rainbow Summer Collection, this garment is designed for both children and adults, with sizes ranging from 2-3 years through to adult XL. The sweater features a classic pullover construction with set-in sleeves and a comfortable fit suitable for warm-weather wear.

Techniques Used

Vienna is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create both visual interest and structural integrity:

  • Bottom-up construction: The garment is knitted from the lower edge upward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and a straightforward assembly process.
  • Worked flat: All pieces are knitted on straight needles in flat rows rather than in the round, then seamed together at completion.
  • Lace patterning: The design incorporates lace stitches that create an openwork effect, adding visual texture and breathability ideal for summer garments.
  • Striped colorwork: The Vienna pattern features horizontal stripes worked in multiple yarn colors, creating a dynamic visual effect throughout the garment.
  • Seamed construction: Individual pieces (front, back, and sleeves) are knitted separately and then seamed together using mattress stitch or similar techniques.

Stitches Used

The Vienna pattern employs fundamental and decorative stitches to achieve its finished appearance:

  • Garter stitch (knit every row) for edge sections and structural stability
  • Stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) as the base fabric
  • Lace stitches including yarn overs and decreases (K2tog, slip-knit-psso) that create the openwork pattern
  • Increases worked by knitting into the front and back of stitches to shape the garment

Materials and Yarn

Vienna is designed to be worked in Juniper Moon Farm Zooey Stripes, a yarn specifically formulated for striped colorwork projects. The sweater version requires Juniper Moon Farm Zooey in color 208 Ultraviolet as the primary yarn, with additional coordinating colors for the striped sections. Each skein weighs 100 grams, with yardage requirements varying by size.

The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75mm) needles for the main fabric, providing an appropriate gauge for the yarn weight and creating a fabric with good drape suitable for summer wear. The needle size ensures that the lace stitches remain visible and the stripes maintain their definition throughout the finished garment.

Construction Details

The Vienna pattern begins with casting on stitches for the back piece and working in horizontal stripes using the designated yarn colors. The lace pattern is introduced with a repeating sequence of yarn overs and decreases that create the characteristic openwork design. After the back is completed to the required length, armhole shaping is achieved by casting off stitches at the beginning of rows, followed by decreasing one stitch at each end over several rows to create a fitted sleeve cap.

The sweater is available in nine different sizes for children (2-3 years through 10-11 years) and five adult sizes (S through XL), with finished chest measurements ranging from 20 inches (51cm) for the smallest child size to 48 inches (121cm) for the largest adult size. Sleeve lengths and body lengths are proportionally adjusted for each size, ensuring proper fit across the full size range.
