Bridie Top and Sweater by Ursula McGrath

What is Being Made

The Bridie is a versatile knitted garment available in two versions: a fitted top and a classic sweater. Both designs feature a contemporary striped colorway from the Rainbow Summer Collection. The pattern offers multiple sizes ranging from toddler (2-3 years) through adult (XL), with finished chest measurements from 22 inches to 40 inches. The sweater includes full-length sleeves, while the top provides a sleeveless alternative for warmer weather wear.

Techniques Used

This design employs bottom-up construction, meaning pieces are knitted from the lower edge upward, allowing for easy length adjustments during the knitting process. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which means each piece is created as a flat panel that will later be seamed together. The pattern uses seaming to join the finished pieces—back, front, and sleeves—creating a traditional garment structure. Striped colorwork is integral to the design, with color changes creating horizontal bands throughout the piece. The stripes are worked using two distinct yarn colors alternated in sequence, adding visual interest while maintaining straightforward knitting techniques.

Stitches Used

The Bridie primarily features stockinette stitch (abbreviated as St st), which creates the smooth, classic fabric that forms the main body of the sweater. The pattern also incorporates double moss stitch (abbreviated as Db.ms.st) for the ribbed cuff sections at the lower edge, providing elasticity and a finished appearance. Basic knit and purl stitches form the foundation of both stitch patterns, with the ribbing created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence to create texture and stretch.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Bridie is designed to be knitted with Juniper Moon Farm ZOOEY, a yarn available in the two colors specified for this pattern. Yarn A is color 63 Key Lime, while Yarn B is color 205 Clover, creating a fresh, nature-inspired color palette. Each color requires 2 to 3 skeins of 100g weight depending on the size being made, with larger sizes requiring additional yardage. The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75mm) needles for the main fabric, which are appropriately sized to work with the Juniper Moon Farm ZOOEY yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.

Finished Measurements

Sweater: Finished chest widths range from 24 inches to 44 inches across nine size options. Length varies from 14 inches for the smallest size to 25 inches for the largest, with sleeve lengths ranging from 9 inches to 18½ inches depending on size.

Top: The sleeveless version offers finished chest widths from 30 inches to 50 inches, with lengths matching the sweater version from 14 inches to 25 inches.

Construction Details

The back piece begins with a cast-on of 66 to 122 stitches depending on size, worked in double moss stitch for the initial ribbed edge. The pattern then transitions to stockinette stitch with the striped colorwork, alternating between Yarn A and Yarn B in defined color blocks. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic cast-offs at the underarm, with the pattern providing specific stitch reduction instructions for each size. The seamed construction method requires finishing all pieces separately before joining them together, creating a polished, professional appearance with visible seams at the side and sleeve attachments.
