What is Being Made

The Gleni collection features a coordinating scarf and hat set designed by Jacqueline van Dillen. The scarf measures approximately 10 inches wide by 60 inches long, while the hat has a circumference of approximately 18½ inches and a length of approximately 8½ inches with the brim folded back. These pieces are part of the Winter Snuggles Collection and work together as a complete winter accessory set.

Craft and Techniques

This is an advanced knitting project that employs sophisticated colorwork and slip-stitch techniques. The primary technique used throughout both garments is the block pattern, which creates visual interest through strategic color changes and slip stitches. The scarf uses a distinctive method where stitches are slid to the opposite end of the needle to work rows from the right side, creating a reversible or textured appearance. This technique requires careful attention to yarn positioning and stitch management.

The colorwork involves three distinct yarn colors that are worked in repeating blocks, with slip stitches creating texture and pattern definition. Slip stitches are worked both with yarn in back (wyib) and yarn in front (wyif) depending on the row, adding dimensional detail to the finished pieces.

Needles required include a circular needle in size US 9 (5.5mm), 16 inches long, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge, along with one set of four size US 9 (5.5mm) double-pointed needles for working in the round on the hat. A stitch marker is also needed for hat construction.

Gauge

For the scarf, the gauge is 18 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when working the block pattern in rows using size US 9 (5.5mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, particularly important for the scarf's width and length proportions.
