What Is Being Made

The Monochrome Plaid is a crocheted cowl scarf designed by Abbey Swanson of The Firefly Hook. This project creates a faux plaid effect through strategic color blocking and is finished with decorative fringe and button closures. The cowl measures 24" x 11" (61 x 28 cm) when laid flat, excluding fringe, and is sized to fit most wearers comfortably.

Construction Techniques

This cowl is worked using a bottom-up approach in turned rows, creating a flat fabric that is later seamed into a cowl shape. The piece is seamless in its construction method, with color changes worked directly into the fabric rather than applied afterward. The design employs a strategic color-switching technique where yarn not in active use is held on the wrong side of the work and carried along, then incorporated into the finishing fringe.

The color-change method involves working the final yarn over of each stitch with the new color, drawing the new color through all loops on the hook to complete the stitch seamlessly. Cut lengths of the carried yarn (4-6 inches) are later transformed into tassels at the bottom edge, eliminating waste and adding textural interest to the finished piece.

Stitches Used

This project relies on a single primary stitch: single crochet. The entire cowl is constructed using consistent single crochet stitches worked in turned rows. The gauge is 12 stitches by 12 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet, creating a dense, stable fabric suitable for a structured cowl.

Materials

  • Yarn: Three 50-gram balls of Juniper Moon Farm Fourteen yarn in three coordinating colors: color #04 Morning Mist (A), color #03 Silent Night (B), and color #02 Dreamscape (C). The three-color palette creates the monochromatic plaid effect, with the middle hue serving as the primary color and darker and lighter shades providing contrast.
  • Hook: Size US I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Notions: Eight 1/2-inch buttons, matching thread, and a sewing needle for attaching buttons and seaming the cowl

Pattern Details

The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 33 stitches and proceeds through 80 rows total. The first 76 rows follow a detailed color chart that alternates color sections in a structured sequence. Each color section consists of 4 single crochet stitches worked across 4 rows, creating the building blocks of the faux plaid pattern.

Rows 77-80 are worked entirely in color C (Dreamscape) to create a button row. After completion, eight buttons are sewn along row 78, which is then buttoned to row 1 to connect the piece into a cowl shape. The remaining yarn lengths are cut to 4-6 inches and attached to the bottom edge of the cowl to create decorative fringe.

The pattern includes flexibility for customization: crafters can increase the size by adding chains in multiples of 8 to the foundation chain, though this requires purchasing additional yarn. The pattern also provides guidance for achieving similar color effects with different yarn colors by selecting a middle hue as the primary color with darker and lighter contrasting colors.
