Juniper Moon Farm Nightlife Top & Skirt - The Pondicherry Collection

Project Overview

The Nightlife Top & Skirt is a classically modern two-piece set designed by Karen Boykin Findley for Juniper Moon Farm's Pondicherry Collection. This coordinated knit ensemble features a slim-fitting color-blocked sweater paired with a corrugated rib skirt, offering versatile styling options for a polished, contemporary look.

Sweater Construction

Design Features: The sweater showcases a wide-yoke color-blocked design that combines visual interest with structural simplicity. The garment is worked bottom up in separate pieces, then seamed together for a finished, tailored appearance. This construction method allows for precise shaping and ease of customization across seven size options ranging from XS to 3X.

Finished Measurements: Chest circumference ranges from 34 inches (XS) to 56 inches (3X), with corresponding length measurements from 21½ to 24 inches, accommodating various body types and fit preferences.

Stitches & Techniques: The sweater is primarily worked in Stockinette stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a smooth, classic fabric. The color-blocking is achieved through strategic yarn changes, with the main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) creating visual definition in the yoke area.

Skirt Construction

Design Features: The skirt is a slim-fitting design with slight negative ease, creating a flattering silhouette. It is worked top down in the round, a technique that allows for continuous circular knitting without seaming and provides flexibility for length adjustments during the knitting process.

Finished Measurements: Skirt circumference ranges from 25¾ inches (XS) to 46¼ inches (3X), with lengths varying from 19½ to 26½ inches depending on size.

Signature Stitch: The skirt features a custom Zigzag Corrugated Rib stitch, worked in the round over a multiple of 4 stitches. This stitch pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches in both the main color and contrasting color, creating a distinctive textured corrugation. The pattern repeats over six rounds, with strategic color changes that produce a dynamic zigzag visual effect. This stitch provides both elasticity and structure, essential for a well-fitting skirt.

Yarn & Materials

Yarn Selection: This pattern calls for Juniper Moon Farm Findley yarn in two colorways. The main color uses Findley Dappled in #124 English Garden (2-3 balls depending on size), while the contrasting color uses Findley in #41 Brown (1-2 balls depending on size). Findley is a worsted-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and durability for both the smooth stockinette sections and the textured corrugated rib.

Needles & Tools: The pattern requires US 2 (2.75 mm) needles for ribbing sections and US 4 (3.5 mm) needles for the main fabric. Circular needles measuring 24 inches are used for the sweater body and skirt, while double-pointed needles in the same size accommodate smaller circumferences. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and stitch holders for managing live stitches.

Gauge & Fit Considerations

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 24 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, while the Zigzag Corrugated Rib stitch gauges at 28 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches. The skirt's slim fit with slight negative ease creates a close, body-skimming silhouette, making accurate gauge particularly important for proper fit.

Knitting Techniques Summary

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater pieces are knitted from the lower edge upward, allowing for try-ons and length adjustments before binding off
  • Top-Down Circular Knitting: The skirt begins at the waistband and progresses downward in continuous rounds, eliminating side seams
  • Seaming: Sweater pieces are joined using mattress stitch or similar seaming techniques for invisible, professional seams
