Juniper Moon Farm Wickenden Cardigan - The Dales Collection
What Is Being Made
The Wickenden cardigan is an open front knitted cardigan featuring three-quarter length sleeves and decorative cable panels throughout. This versatile layering piece is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 33½ inches to 57½ inches and lengths from 21½ inches to 25½ inches. The design showcases a classic construction suitable for various body types and style preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This cardigan employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance and structure. Cable panels are a primary design feature, adding visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The pattern incorporates increases and decreases to shape the garment, including Make 1 Right (M1R) and Make 1 Left (M1L) increases for seamless shaping, as well as slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases for refined decreasing. The cardigan is constructed using both circular needles and double-pointed needles, allowing for efficient knitting in the round and flat sections as needed. Moss stitch is worked throughout the pattern, creating a textured, reversible fabric that alternates knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Wickenden cardigan utilizes a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches:
- Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, worked at a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm)
- Moss stitch is worked over an even number of stitches in a four-round repeat pattern, alternating knit and purl stitches to create a textured, bumpy surface
- Cable stitches create the distinctive raised panels featured throughout the design
- Make 1 Right (M1R) and Make 1 Left (M1L) increases provide invisible shaping by picking up the strand between stitches
- Make 1 Purl (M1p) increases maintain pattern continuity in purl sections
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases offer a refined, left-leaning decrease that pairs aesthetically with right-leaning increases
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Wickenden cardigan is designed to be knitted with Juniper Moon Farm HeRRiOt yarn in the colorway Dark teal Heather (#1019). Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 6 hanks for the smallest size (XS) to 11 hanks for the largest size (3X), allowing crafters to select the appropriate quantity for their chosen size.
The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles for sections worked in the round and US 5 (3.75 mm) 24-inch (60 cm) circular needles for larger circumference sections. Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for finishing, stitch markers in at least two colors to track pattern repeats and construction sections, scrap yarn or stitch holders for securing stitches during construction, and a cable needle for manipulating stitches in cable panels.
