Juno Jumper in Rowan Kid Classic

What Is Being Made

The Juno Jumper is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Martin Storey for Rowan. This pullover garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from chest measurements of 71–76 cm up to 152–157 cm, making it suitable for a wide range of body sizes from children through adults. The finished garment measurements range from 98 cm to 180 cm in chest circumference, allowing for various fit preferences.

Knitting Techniques

This sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The garment is constructed using flat knitting for the back and front pieces, which are then joined together. Shoulder shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at the beginning of rows over multiple rows to create sloped shoulders that sit properly on the body. The neckline shaping on both the back and front involves binding off stitches and then working additional decreases along the neck edge to create a fitted opening. The pattern uses two-needle circular knitting for the neckband, worked on a circular needle no longer than 50 cm.

The sweater features a ribbed border at the lower edge, worked in alternating knit and purl stitches to create elasticity and a finished appearance. This ribbed section is worked first on smaller needles before transitioning to stockinette stitch on larger needles, a common technique for creating fitted edges that hold their shape.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (glatt rechts) – the main fabric throughout the body of the sweater, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side
  • Ribbed stitch – a combination of knit and purl stitches (1 knit, 1 purl) repeated across the border for elasticity and definition
  • Bind-off stitches – used for shoulder shaping and neckline construction
  • Decrease stitches – worked throughout the neckline shaping to gradually reduce stitch counts and create the neck opening

Materials and Gauge

This pattern is worked in Rowan Kid Classic, a yarn available in multiple colorways including Cement (shade 890) and Tiger (shade 913). Each 50-gram ball of Kid Classic provides sufficient yardage for portions of the garment depending on size selected.

The pattern requires two sizes of knitting needles: size 4 needles for the ribbed borders and size 5 needles for the main stockinette fabric. A circular needle in size 4, measuring no more than 50 cm in length, is used for picking up and working the neckband.

The gauge (tension) is critical for proper fit: 19 stitches and 25 rows should measure 10 x 10 cm when worked in stockinette stitch using size 5 needles. Achieving the correct gauge before beginning ensures the finished garment will match the intended measurements across all nine sizes.

Construction Overview

The Juno Jumper is constructed in three main pieces: a back panel, a front panel, and a neckband. Both the back and front are worked flat from the cast-on edge upward, with the ribbed border established first on smaller needles. Shoulder shaping is introduced partway through the piece, with stitches bound off in stages to create sloped shoulders. The front features a deeper neckline than the back, with additional decreases worked along the neck edge to shape the opening. Once the front and back pieces are complete, live stitches around the neckline are picked up and a ribbed neckband is worked in the round on a circular needle to finish the garment professionally.
