What is Being Made

Jupiter is a knitted sweater designed by Quail Studio for Mode at Rowan. This garment is a pullover-style jumper available in nine sizes, ranging from chest measurements of 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) up to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches), with actual finished chest measurements between 100 cm and 180 cm. The pattern is presented as a downloadable digital PDF and is classified as an advanced beginner-level knitting project.

Techniques Used

The Jupiter sweater employs several fundamental knitting construction techniques. The garment is worked in separate pieces—back, front, and sleeves—which are then assembled. The pattern uses increases and decreases to shape the garment, including specialized increase methods such as M1L (make 1 stitch left) and M1R (make 1 stitch right), which create nearly invisible increases by lifting strands between stitches. The neckline is shaped through strategic decreasing at the neck edges, and shoulder shaping is achieved through bind-offs worked at regular intervals. The neckband is worked separately using circular needles and attached to the finished garment.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Jupiter is designed to be knitted using Mode at Rowan Colourmix yarn, a 50-gram weight yarn. The pattern is photographed in the colorway Rainbow 10100. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 11 balls for the smallest size to 17 balls for the largest size.

The pattern requires 5mm (US size 8) needles. Specifically, you will need one pair of 5mm straight needles for the main body pieces and 5mm circular needles measuring 40 cm in length for working the neckband. Additional notions include stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.

Gauge and Tension
