What is Being Made

The Kindle Shawl is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl designed by Quail Studio. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished shawl measuring 41 centimeters wide (16¼ inches) and 227 centimeters long (89¼ inches), making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering and draping.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern uses two distinct yarns from the MODE at Rowan collection to create visual interest and textural variation:

• Yarn A: Cotton DK in Pearl 010 – 5 balls of 50 grams each, providing the main structure and border of the shawl
• Yarn B: Alpaca Haze in Golden 021 – 3 balls of 25 grams each, used for the decorative lace pattern sections
• Needles: One pair of 3.5mm needles (US size 4)

Tension and Gauge

The pattern is worked to a tension of 19 stitches and 32 rows over 10 centimeters, measured over the lace pattern using 3.5mm needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for the shawl to reach its intended finished measurements.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Kindle Shawl employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners who have mastered basic skills:

• Garter Stitch (g st): Used for the opening rows and closing border, creating a textured, reversible fabric. The shawl begins with 3 rows of garter stitch in Yarn A, and concludes with 3 additional rows of garter stitch before casting off.
• Lace Pattern: The central design features a repeating lace motif worked over 8 rows. This pattern alternates between yarn A and yarn B sections, creating visual contrast and delicate openwork.
• Yarn Over (yo): A fundamental lace technique used to create decorative holes and increase stitches. In the pattern, yarn overs are worked multiple times within each repeat to establish the lace structure.
• Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the lace pattern and maintain stitch count.
• Slip Slip Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches individually as if to knit, then inserting the left needle into the front of these slipped stitches and knitting them together as one stitch.
• Purl Stitches: Used on wrong-side rows to create the fabric structure and definition between pattern repeats.

Pattern Structure

The shawl construction begins with casting on 78 stitches using Yarn A and 3.5mm needles. The first three rows are worked in garter stitch to establish a stable foundation. Row 4 introduces purl stitches, transitioning into the main lace pattern.

The lace pattern is introduced in Row 5 using Yarn B, featuring a repeating motif of knit stitches interspersed with yarn overs and decreases. Row 6 is purled in Yarn B, and Row 7 works the complementary decreases to balance the yarn overs from Row 5. Row 8 is knitted in Yarn B, completing one 8-row pattern repeat. These 8 rows establish the lace pattern, which is then repeated continuously until the shawl reaches approximately 225 centimeters in length.

The pattern concludes with the shawl ending on a right-side row after completing Row 8 of the lace pattern. Yarn A is then used to work 3 final rows in garter stitch, providing a finished edge that mirrors the opening rows. The stitches are cast off knitwise on the wrong-side row.

Finishing

Once knitting is complete, the shawl should be blocked to the specified tension and measurements. Blocking helps even out the lace pattern, sets the stitches, and ensures the shawl reaches its intended dimensions of 41 centimeters wide by 227 centimeters long.
