Koigu Breckenvale Sweater

What is Being Made

The Breckenvale Sweater is a classic pullover design available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2X, with finished bust measurements from 37 inches (94 cm) to 53 inches (134.5 cm). This garment features a sophisticated cable panel as its focal point, combined with garter stitch edges and ribbed cuffs for a polished, traditional aesthetic. The sweater is designed by Melissa Leapman and was originally published in Koigu Magazine issue 9.

Techniques Used

The Breckenvale Sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create its structured silhouette:

  • Worked Flat: The garment pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in a continuous circle, allowing for seamed construction
  • Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is built from the cast-on edge upward, beginning with the back and front panels before assembly
  • Seamed Assembly: Individual pieces are joined together using yarn and a needle after completion, creating clean seams along the sides and shoulders
  • Cable Work: A prominent cable panel measuring 7¾ inches (19.5 cm) across is incorporated as a central design element, requiring a cable needle to manipulate stitches and create the twisted rope-like texture
  • Worked in the Round: Ribbed cuffs and neckline shaping are worked using circular techniques for seamless finishing
  • Shoulder Shaping: Bind-off decreases are worked at the shoulder edges to create proper garment fit and structure
  • Neck Shaping: Strategic bind-offs and decreases at the neckline create a comfortable, well-proportioned opening

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates three primary stitch patterns to create visual interest and structural integrity:

  • Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, this textured stitch appears on the first and last 10 (7, 10, 7, 10) stitches of the back and front panels, depending on size. Garter stitch provides a stable, non-curling edge and adds visual definition to the garment sides
  • Cable Pattern: A charted cable design serves as the centerpiece of the sweater. The cable panel requires a cable needle to cross groups of stitches over one another, creating the distinctive twisted, rope-like appearance characteristic of cable knit sweaters
  • 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches in a two-by-two pattern create elastic ribbing at the cuffs and neckline. The ribbing is worked by knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches on subsequent rows, allowing the fabric to stretch and recover

Materials

The Breckenvale Sweater is designed to be worked in Koigu Chelsea Aran yarn, a worsted-weight fiber that provides excellent stitch definition for cable work. The pattern requires 9 to 12 hanks depending on size, with the specific color referenced as #C492. Knitters should use US Size 8 (5mm) needles for the main fabric, along with a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches and a yarn needle for seaming pieces together after completion.

The gauge is critical for proper fit: 20 stitches and 27 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in the pattern stitch. The 66-stitch cable panel measures 7¾ inches (19.5 cm) across at this gauge. A helpful note in the pattern recommends alternating two rows from each of two balls of yarn to prevent color pooling, a technique that ensures even color distribution in solid-colored yarns.
