Koigu Painters T-Shirt

What is Being Made

The Koigu Painters T-Shirt is a knitted short-sleeve sweater designed by Deborah Newton. This garment is constructed as a pullover-style t-shirt with a crew neckline, available in four finished sizes to fit Small (32-34" bust), Medium (36-38" bust), Large (42-44" bust), and Extra Large (46-48" bust). The finished body circumference ranges from 35" to 50" depending on size, with length to shoulder at the neckline measuring 22" to 25".

Techniques Used

This sweater is worked flat on straight needles using a distinctive two-section construction method. The Front and Back pieces are each knitted in two separate sections, with the right-hand side worked from the lower edge up to the shoulder, followed by picking up stitches along the side edge to work the left-hand side toward the armhole extension. This construction approach allows for creative color arrangement and management of the striped pattern throughout the garment. The pattern emphasizes the importance of checking gauge before beginning, as row counts are critical for achieving correct garment lengths. To streamline the finishing process, the pattern recommends weaving in yarn ends at the beginning of each new color section rather than waiting until the end.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, created by knitting all right-side rows and purling all wrong-side rows
  • Garter Stitch – Used for textural elements, created by knitting every row
  • Stripes – The sweater features a striped pattern that can be arranged and knitted in any color sequence the maker prefers, with varying lengths of stripes encouraged for visual interest

Materials and Tools

The Koigu Painters T-Shirt uses Koigu KPPPM yarn, which is 100% merino wool. The pattern calls for 2 to 3 "Pencil Box" sets, specifically using the TRIBAL ART and CAROUSEL colorways from Koigu's collection. Each Pencil Box set contains 25g of yarn with 87 yards (80 meters) per skein. The project requires Size 2 (2.75mm) straight knitting needles for the main body work, as well as Size 2 circular knitting needles in both 16" and 24" lengths for working the neckline. Additional tools include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a tapestry needle for weaving in the yarn ends. The recommended gauge is 28 stitches and 44 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in Stockinette Stitch using Size 2 needles.
