Koigu Romantique Textured Scarf

What Is Being Made

Romantique is a seamless, textured knit scarf designed by Deborah Newton for the Koigu Pencil Box Collection. This finished scarf measures approximately 88 inches (220 centimeters) in length and 8 inches (20 centimeters) in width, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or draping. The design showcases all 10 colors from the Koigu Pencil Box collection through strategic color blending and alternation.

Techniques Used

Romantique employs several key knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance:

  • Bottom-up construction: The scarf is knitted from one end to the other in a single piece, building length as you progress through the pattern repeats.
  • Seamless, flat knitting: The scarf is worked flat on straight needles without seaming, creating a finished edge that requires no additional finishing work.
  • Color blending: When transitioning between the 10 different yarn colors in the Pencil Box, colors are alternated every 2 rows at the color change points. This creates smooth, visually interesting color transitions rather than abrupt shifts between hues.
  • Garter stitch edging: The first and last 2 stitches of every row are worked in garter stitch, creating a neat, stable selvage edge that frames the textured pattern.

Stitches Used

The pattern combines fundamental and decorative stitches to build texture and visual interest:

  • Garter stitch: Knit stitches on both right-side and wrong-side rows create the bumpy, reversible texture used for edge stitches and ridge blocks.
  • Stockinette stitch: Knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows, used within the pattern repeats to create smooth blocks that contrast with textured areas.
  • Right Twist (RT): A custom stitch abbreviation defined as knit 2 together, leave on needle, then knit the first stitch again before slipping both stitches from the needle. This creates a twisted, textured column.
  • Knit 2 together (K2tog): A left-leaning decrease used in combination with yarn overs to create the eyelet and twist columns.
  • Yarn over (yo): Creates decorative eyelets that complement the twisted stitch columns, adding visual lightness to the textured design.
  • Purl ridges: Blocks of 8 purl stitches create horizontal ridges that alternate with the twist and eyelet columns, forming the primary pattern repeat.

Pattern Structure

The scarf uses a 40-row repeat that alternates between two distinct pattern sections. Rows 1-20 feature twist stitch and eyelet columns that shift position relative to the purl ridge blocks. Rows 21-40 mirror this arrangement with the textured columns moving to different positions within the repeat. This alternation creates a balanced, all-over pattern that remains visually engaging throughout the length of the scarf.

Materials

Romantique is designed to be knitted with Koigu KPPPM Pencil Pack Romantique, which contains 10 demi skeins in the colorway selection of Urban Dweller, Lipstick, and Reds. Each demi skein weighs 25 grams and provides 87 yards (80 meters) of yarn, for a total of approximately 870 yards (800 meters) across the complete set. The yarn is 100% Merino wool, providing softness, breathability, and elasticity ideal for a scarf that drapes beautifully.

The pattern calls for 3.75mm/US5 needles (or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge) and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The recommended gauge is approximately 26 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches when worked in the pattern stitch, ensuring that the finished scarf achieves the intended dimensions and drape.
